Formé en 2001, LANDS OF PAST n’est pas à proprement parler un groupe. Il s’agit davantage d’un projet monté par un couple de compositeurs qui s’est peu à peu entouré d’un nombre croissant de musiciens. Ainsi, cette première démo aura nécessité le concours de 9 membres !
L’écriture n’est pas rigide ce qui permet à la formation de faire varier les ambiances au grès de son humeur.
Le premier titre est résolument mélancolique, il démarre sur une intro au synthé qui lui donne immédiatement sa touche Dark, puis surgissent un phrasé de guitare et une rythmique Metal. Le chant lyrique féminin est clairement le principal intérêt de ce titre qui lui est d’ailleurs entièrement dédié car les ajouts de violon, de violoncelle et les arpèges de guitare ne font que soutenir cette voix. Le schéma est assez classique mais il faut admettre que l’écoute est plaisante.
Le second titre débute également dans la nostalgie avec une intro au violoncelle, suivie par un chant féminin très convaincant auquel répond un chant masculin clair. Hélas, le bonheur ne dure pas longtemps car les deux chants se répondent dans ce qui pourrait bien ressembler à une comédie musicale de Gérard Presgurvic. C’est également le cas du dernier titre “Corresia”, une ballade langoureuse. Et c’est le principal (le seul ?) défaut de cette démo : le tout est franchement mélodique et la puissance - lorsqu’il y en a - a bien du mal à resurgir. Call est donc une œuvre davantage mélodique et atmosphérique que Metal ; elle a du mal a marier les deux tendances. Espérons que le groupe saura trouver un meilleur équilibre sur un album qui mériterait de voir le jour.
Il est indispensable de complimenter le travail du guitariste solo qui fait un travail remarquable sur “Fallen Pledge” où il trouve le ton juste.
Côté production, on a plutôt de quoi se réjouir. On peut toutefois noter un crachouilli des cymbales – mixées trop haut, de toutes façons. Mais le travail est sérieux et soigné, il ne gâche en rien notre écoute.
