Oui, bon, je sais, “Black Metal symphonique”, c’est un peu fourre-tout mais que vouliez-vous que je fasse avec “Grand Orchestral Kamikaze Metal from Japan” ? Pas facile à définir, hein ?
Pour son deuxième opus, You Oshima reste seul maître à bord. Et il confirme ses tendances schizophrènes ainsi qu’une ouverture d’esprit qui risque d’en dérouter plus d’un !
Ça part dans tous les sens : sur des structures Black, sont greffées des nappes de claviers (jusque là rien d’étonnant sauf qu’il y en a beaucoup), de la harpe, du piano, des passages parlés, des solos magnifiques et volontiers longs, et surtout, des arrangement symphoniques. Décortiquons un peu : sur le fond Black, pas grand chose à dire, c’est finalement là que l’on trouve le moins d’originalité, ce qui ne signifie pas que c’est mauvais, au contraire. On retrouve donc une rythmique rapide accompagnée par un chant Black plus gentillet qu’à l’accoutumé. Par contre, il y a une belle densité de solos (comme sur l’album précédent) magnifiquement interprétés. Tantôt, les passages symphoniques sont ajoutés en renfort des structures Black ; c’est ainsi que sur une majorité de titres on trouve des chœurs accompagnant le chant. Tantôt, les orchestrations interrompent la brutalité des riffs et nous avons droit à plusieurs minutes de concerto. Cette déstructuration donne parfois l’impression d’écouter du progressif (“The Embers Of Reverie”, et l’instrumental “Utakata”). Sur ce dernier point, une petite mise en garde s’impose : les amateurs de Black seront sans doute décontenancés par autant de passages purement instrumentaux et/ou de musique classique ; la liste est longue : les titres d’intro et de fermeture, “Utakata”, “In The Woods”, ainsi que de nombreuses parties à l’intérieur des morceaux restant ! Au total, près d’un tiers de cet album est dépourvu de riff et de chant. Un quart d’heure de concerto, c’est long quand on aime le Black !
La musique de KADENZZA ne manque pas de qualités, l’originalité étant certainement la première d’entre elles.
