15 ans de carrière et 8 albums n’auront pas permis aux Canadiens de se forger une réputation en dehors des frontières de leur pays. Ce nouvel opus pourrait faire évoluer favorablement les choses car l’on y trouve beaucoup de bonnes choses bien faites.
Par le passé, on a souvent reproché au groupe d’abuser des influences orientales, ce qui a suscité des comparaisons hâtives avec LED ZEPPELIN. Ici, le groupe s’est affranchi de presque tout apport de culture étrangère (hormis l’intro de “Luxuria”), même si demeure l’impression que le groupe jouit d’une érudition musicale évidente ainsi que d’une grande ouverture d’esprit. Ainsi, il n’est pas facile de décrire ce Seven Circles ; album très varié qui puise chez Bowie, U2 et Page/Plant (quand même un petit peu). Mais ces comparaisons, si elles sont avérées, n’en demeurent pas moins restrictives, puisque chacun y entendra des dizaines de références parfois opposées.
Le tout est davantage Rock que Metal même si certains passages durcissent le ton. Or, la qualité de l’ensemble permettrait facilement des diffusions radios, plusieurs singles pouvant se détacher de l’ensemble.
Le groupe prend le parti de mélanger ses influences au sein même des morceaux de sorte que la plupart des titres à tendance Rock contient malgré tout un ou plusieurs passages plus musclés. Certaines chansons se démarquent de cette tendance et penchent vers un style distinct : un Hard Rock à la Glenn Hughes sur “Overload”, le Stoner pour “Wrintings On The Wall”, plus deux balades agréables,... Cerise sur le gâteau, “Wishing You Would Stay” est un petit bijou de Rock moderne bénéficiant d’un contre-chant féminin discret mais qui donne une tout autre dimension à ce morceau. D’ailleurs les arrangements sont magnifiques, n’hésitant pas à puiser dans un panel très large : il y a des apports de synthé, de cordes, de guitare acoustique, des chœurs,... Deux équipes se sont chargé de la production, se partageant les morceaux : d’un côté Bob Rock en personne, et de l’autre Gavin Brown et Jeff Martin qui font un travail admirable.
Un excellent album qui devrait ravir les amateurs de bon Hard Rock mélodique et de Rock en général, étant entendu que THE TEA PARTY n’est pas franchement un groupe de Metal.
