HELLOWEEN (de) - Keeper of the Seven Keys - The Legacy (2005)

La sortie d'un nouvel album d'HELLOWEEN est toujours très attendue par leurs nombreux fans. Surtout lorsque le groupe comporte (encore!) un nouveau membre. Mais, encore plus lorsque le titre est aussi alléchant que celui-ci! Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1 & 2 ont en effet propulsé HELLOWEEN au sommet de leur gloire, et ils sont toujours cités comme références par leurs fans. Une dizaine d'albums et de nombreux changements de line-up plus tard, HELLOWEEN cherche toujours à prouver qu'ils peuvent faire aussi bien qu'à leurs débuts. En dépit d'excellents opus tels que The Time of the Oath, ils n'ont jamais réussi à susciter un engouement aussi important que pour les "Keeper". Décidés à briser ce mauvais sort (cf. interview de Michael Weikath), ils annoncent clairement leur intention de renouer avec le succès en donnant ce titre à leur nouvel album.
Cette appellation est-elle justifiée ou s'agit-il d'un simple coup marketing? Chacun se fera sa propre idée, mais même si tout n'est pas parfait, je pense que le titre est bel et bien mérité, en particulier son sous-titre The Legacy. Le groupe n'a en effet pas la prétention de reproduire à l'identique les 2 premiers "Keeper" mais nous invite à découvrir ce que donne "l'héritage" de l'ancienne période HELLOWEEN (Hansen et Kiske) mélangée à la nouvelle période (Andi Deris), en intégrant qui plus est de nouveaux éléments plus modernes.
Ainsi, on retrouve indéniablement le son de l'époque "Keeper". Il y a à mon sens plus de solos de guitares, tous très bons, dont les sonorités rappellent vraiment les albums "Keeper". La voix d'Andi Deris, tout en gardant sa particularité, se rapprocherait presque sur certains morceaux de celle de Michael Kiske. Le morceau "Mrs God", très léger, drôle et dynamique, peut tout à fait rappeler un "Dr Stein", le rythme rapide de "Get it Up" lui possède des similarités avec celui de "I want Out'", le très long "King For A 1000 Years" peut faire penser au morceau "Keeper Of The Seven Keys", et d'ailleurs, au niveau des paroles, c'est un peu la suite...
Mais attention, les fans de la première heure, les plus nostalgiques qui s'attendent à écouter "Keeper 3" seront certainement déçus. Il ne s'agit absolument pas d'une copie conforme des 2 premiers "Keeper", et d'ailleurs, à quoi bon? Si je veux écouter "Keeper 1", je le mets dans mon lecteur! Non, HELLOWEEN ne se contente pas de reproduire les albums de l'époque, le groupe va plus loin en intégrant de nouveaux composants à tout ce qui fait leur essence. C'est ce qui fait la force de ce nouvel opus, qui se distingue clairement de leurs dernières productions.
Le morceau "Occasion Avenue" en est probablement la meilleure preuve. C'est peut-être un des meilleurs titres du double album. Il commence par des extraits d'anciens hits du groupe, avec une voix se moquant de ces titres. La chanson, très longue, enchaîne alors aussi bien des passages de HELLOWEEN "récent" que du HELLOWEEN "classique", et d'excellents solos de guitare. Les introductions très originales sur plusieurs morceaux témoignent aussi de cette influence plus moderne ("Invisible Man", "Come Alive"...). A noter aussi sur "Light The Universe", une ballade fort sympathique mais assez classique, la participation de Candice Night. Pour la première fois de toute leur carrière, le groupe enregistre un duo avec une voix féminine!
En conclusion, les avis des fans seront probablement très partagés sur cet album, mais ceux qui aiment aussi bien l'ancien que le nouveau HELLOWEEN devraient être comblés. Keeper Of The Seven Keys – The Legacy concentre en effet le meilleur de ces 2 périodes, tout en y ajoutant de nouveaux ingrédients inédits très efficaces, pour un résultat vraiment remarquable! Quoiqu'il en soit, tout fan qui se respecte se doit de posséder cet album, qui est très riche, et qui marque un tournant important dans la carrière du groupe.
