La particularité de cette formation suisse est que le groupe évolue sans bassiste, ce qui ne l’empêche pas d’envoyer un peu de basse dans certains morceaux. Autant dire que ça en gênera certains, on a parfois envie de faire vibrer les murs. Mais ceci étant, la qualité irréprochable du disque fait que ce petit plus (ou moins, selon la vision que l’on a) est très peu dérangeante. Le groupe a sans aucun doute un bon CV puisque il a joué des dates avec des références comme ISIS, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, USANE, et d’autres encore. On notera aussi la qualité de l’artwork, très travaillé. Allez, on passe sans plus attendre dans le concret, avec l’album en lui-même.
Le cd enchaîne sans ménagement les morceaux de 30 secondes comme de 10 minutes, ce qui est assez déroutant au début, même si on commence à avoir l’habitude. C’est donc après 27 secondes sur un tempo ultra-rapide que débute le disque, avec un grind très violent. On passe sans s’en rendre compte à un morceau intègre, de longueur réglementaire si j’ose dire, toujours très vite, accompagné des hurlements torturés du chanteur, des passages un poil déstructurés entre des riffs plus conventionnels empreints d’efficacité. Puis, un break avant une sorte de mosh part complètement barrée, avec des guitares dissonantes, nous laisse une fois de plus sur place. On passe à une minute de screamo avec « Néant », ça rafraîchi, c’est bien fait, net, carré, rien à redire. Le titre suivant nous donne un riff mélangeant hardcore saccadé et post-hardcore triste et torturé, le tout résonnant étrangement, et ce dû au son très strident et dépourvu de basse du groupe. On a le droit dans ce morceau de plus de 10 mins aux influences screamo du groupe, mais aussi de fortement bien orchestrées parties atmosphériques, dans la veine des renommés ISIS, NEUROSIS et autres CULT OF LUNA.
On arrive enfin au morceau qui est à mon avis LE morceau de cet album : « El Vetic ». Le plus éprouvant, mais aussi le plus complet. C'est-à-dire qu’il regroupe la plupart des styles utilisés par CORTEZ : intro lente et déstructurée, suivie d’un hardcore speedé, sur lesquels se posent des hurlements inintelligibles, avant de ralentir sur des passages très mélancoliques, un beat de batterie qui reste en tête, et nous voilà à la fin du morceau, qui m’a marquée par la tristesse qu’il dégage. Les cris déchirants du chanteur, transpirant le désespoir et la noirceur de la musique. On en a les larmes aux yeux, j’en reste retourné.
On assiste à ce que le hardcore moderne peut nous offrir de meilleur, CORTEZ est un groupe qui a de l’avenir. C’est par son talent, son travail et sa musique exceptionnelle qu’il arrivera au rang des références du genre. Chapeau bas, bravo.
