Initialement baptisé Abaddon, le groupe se rebaptise vite BERSERK et est à ce jour considéré comme la référence Black Metal de l’autre côté des Pyrénées.
Suite à leurs débuts avec …From The Celtiberian Woods édité chez Oaken Shield en 2000, les Ibériques ont délivré un second album de Black Metal païen justement intitulé Rites Of Supremacy.
A l’origine enregistré en Juillet 2002, Rites Of Supremacy sort de nouveau sur Oaken Shield et place BERSERK comme le ténor de la scène Black Metal Espagnole et comme une valeur montante du Black Metal païen. A ce titre, leurs textes sont surtout axés autour des combats des tribus païennes ibériques contre la propagation du Christianisme et l’invasion des armées venues de Rome.
Les Celtibères de BERSERK prouvent avec leur Black Metal hargneux qu’ils auraient bien eu envie d’être de la partie en ces temps bien lointains. On perçoit dans leur musique une sérieuse envie d’en découdre avec les légions Romaines, avec des titres comme « Berserker’s Blood », « Rites Of Supremacy ». BERSERK ne se contente pourtant pas d’évoluer dans le registre du brutal et se permet un interlude instrumental avec « De Este A Oeste », aussi bien que des morceaux plus épiques et plus graves tels que « Journey To Eternity » ou « Astapa’s Ashes ».
Ajoutons à cela quelques nappes de claviers qui viennent habiller des compositions au son brut, cru et sec. Rien d’innovant mais ca le fait toujours, avec en prime une production qui colle bien au style.
Cependant, BERSERK éprouve quelques difficultés à clore ses morceaux, si bien que l’on décroche légèrement l’oreille. Mais toujours est-il que Rites Of Supremacy représente un bon album de Black Metal païen. Les traditionnelles poses belliqueuses (francisques, glaives et écus…) des membres maculés de corpsepaints au
milieu des bois sont toujours de rigueur et participent au folklore du genre. Blacus Metallicus Hispanicus : Convaincant !
