Formé en 1994, SUBWAY TO SALLY s’est définitivement imposé comme un des vétérans du genre Folk-Metal. Voici leur dernière production intitulée Nord Nord Ost. Autant vous dire tout de suite qu’il n’y a pas de révolution du genre, toutefois on se démarque quelque peu des formations habituelles qui restent trop souvent cloisonnées dans une musique festive assez légère…
Mais revenons plutôt à nos moutons. Cet opus regorge de bonnes idées, avec des compos toutes différentes les unes des autres, et qui s’enchaînent vraiment bien. On se laisse facilement charmer par la jolie ballade « Feuerkind » où la maîtrise mélodique des musiciens est incontestable. L’entraînant morceau « S.O.S » a tendance heavy nous donnera aisément envie de bouger. On a même droit à un superbe passage de cornemuse sur le titre « Oktoberfest » qui est du plus bel effet.
Cela dit, un énorme conflit subsiste au sein de ce groupe. D’un coté, on a un chant vraiment très kitsch, pas au top de sa virilité, en Allemand qui plus est. Et d’un autre coté il y a les guitares acérées, bien lourdes, avec de superbes riffs, parfois proches du Doom ou du Power, accompagnés par de belles ornementations au clavier. Du coup, on est partagé entre réel intérêt et amusement, c’est vraiment déstabilisant. Ceci est très dommage car sans ce problème on aurait vraiment une musique de très grande qualité. Mais bon, on ne va pas demander à un aussi vieux groupe de changer sa sauce maintenant, malheureusement…
