En marge de NARNIA, Christian Rivel et Linus Kase ont décidé de monter un projet leur permettant d’assouvir leur passion commune pour QUEEN, KANSAS, STYX et les BUGGLES. Ils se sont donc entourés de musiciens sélectionnés pour leur capacité à jouer dans ce registre. Ils ont également convaincu Kerry Livgren (KANSAS) d’intervenir sur “Ground Zero” issue de son répertoire.
Au final, le résultat est confondant. On a vraiment le sentiment que le groupe s’est plongé dans l’esprit du Rock progressif des années 70 pour en ressortir une œuvre-hommage fidèle en tout point. L’interprétation est irréprochable, seul le chanteur semble parfois un peu dépassé dans sa tentative de rivaliser avec Freddie Mercury à certains moments. Mais si la comparaison ne tourne pas à son avantage, il ne faut pas en conclure qu’il chante mal, c’est tout le contraire.
Il n’en demeure pas moins que l’on reste assez perplexe après l’écoute de ce Maiden Voyage qui se contente d’explorer le passé sans apporter grand chose de neuf. Certes, on est admiratif de cette capacité de reproduire les structures musicales si caractéristiques des groupes cités plus haut, mais cela ne nous procure pas un plaisir immense.
Maiden Voyage s’adresse donc presque exclusivement aux adorateurs du Rock progressif old school.
