Voilà une belle preuve qu’il ne faut jamais se fier aux apparences. Sous l’aspect très glauque de la pochette se cache en effet une somptueuse galette, une perle d’inspiration et d’idées que je vous conseille de découvrir impérativement.
A la croisée entre Stoner, Sludge, Noise ou encore Doom, il est assez difficile de coller une étiquette à CAPRICORNS. Tantôt atmosphérique, tantôt d’une lourdeur impitoyable, les compositions nous assomment par leur intelligence et leur efficacité. Les mélodies entêtantes nous surprennent à chaque instant. Difficile de ne pas succomber… Par ailleurs les musiciens relèvent le défi ô combien difficile de laisser une grande place à l’instrumentale. Le chant n’est présent que lorsqu’il amène vraiment quelque chose en plus. Par exemple sur « The First Broken Promise » où la voix semblable à celle d’un démon à l’agonie nous envahi littéralement. Ces gémissements provoquent un réel malaise en nous, c’est vraiment très réussi. La voix reste donc au même niveau que les instruments, jamais elle ne prendra le pas sur l’ensemble comme c’est souvent le cas ailleurs.
A aucun moment on ne s’ennuie réellement, allant de surprise en surprise. On se plait à voir les mélodies évoluer, gagner en puissance et en profondeur. Mais je vous rassure, une fois l’effet de surprise passé, on prend toujours un malin plaisir à écouter cet album richissime. On notera l’aspect théâtral de l’opus. Un réel travail historique a été fourni pour chaque titre qui nous renvoie à un fait réel passé, ce qui en accentue incroyablement la force. Les titres comme « 1969 : A Predator Among Us » se laissent découvrir tel une épopée fantastique, nous faisant traverser multiples paysages, aventures et danger... Un pur bonheur.
