D’après la mythologie des anciens Egyptiens, NEPHTYS était une déesse de la Mort qui représentait un des plus grand mystères de l’existence, la journée où la Mort nous frappe de son inévitable serpe.
Toutefois, NEPHTYS était également perçue comme l’amie des Morts, elle portait notamment de grandes ailes et transportait les récents défunts la nuit tombée vers les rives obscures de l’Autre Monde. Plus de 2000 ans ont passés et la divinité NEPHTYS est réapparue à l’hiver 2000 au Portugal sous les traits d’un quintet composé de Rolando Barros à la batterie, de Joao Abraços et Nuno Gervasio aux guitares, les deux fondateurs de ce projet et seuls restes mortuaires du groupe HADES. Plus tard, le combo Lusitanien fut rejoint par Ivo Conceiçao à la basse et aux synthés. Bruno Fernandes, chanteur de session, ferme la marche en apparaissant en guest pour poser ses lignes vocales sur ce Mini CD produit par Rolando Barros et NEPHTYS.
Au travers des cinq morceaux contenus dans cette première livraison studio intitulée …Yet The Choirs of Vendetta, les Portugais proposent un Black Metal symphonique plutôt old-school, il n’y a pas de doute quant à cela. S’agissant d’une auto-production, le travail effectué au niveau du son et du mixage est somme toute honorable et le rendu demeure fort agréable à l’écoute.
Qui dit Black Metal symphonique dit richesses orchestrales et arrangements grandiloquents. Une demi-heure pour seulement cinq titres, ceci vous en dit long sur la durée des morceaux. NEPHTYS n’échappe évidemment pas à ce postulat puisque les titres englobent des moments orchestraux distillés par les synthés, et même s’ils sont un tantinet trop mis en avant aux dépens des guitares, ceux-ci contribuent à créer des moments emphatiques parfois jubilatoires comme sur les titres « Comedy of Gods » ou sur « Bridges Too Frail », les morceaux de loin les plus intéressants du MCD. En effet, Bruno Fernandes peut mettre en valeur sa palette vocale et ses nombreuses idées qui confèrent aux morceaux une autre couleur et une nouvelle profondeur. D’un point de vue technique, les hommes de l’Atlantique ne font pas montre de beaucoup de difficultés et semblent plutôt maîtriser leur sujet. A l’image d’un EMPEROR, les Lusitaniens ont un goût prononcé pour les arrangements grandioses et complexes, et ce en dépit d’un manque de moyens.
Bien que l’ensemble comporte encore quelques imperfections comme par exemple une trop forte propension aux complications inutiles et aux cérémonies divinatoires, il serait intéressant de voir ce que pourrait donner NEPHTYS sur un album car le potentiel est présent. Une formation professionnelle et probante à suivre.
