GOATHEMY est un groupe originaire de Finlande articulé autour de son leader Goath (voix/guitares). Le groupe dans sa configuration actuelle existe depuis 2002 mais le projet GOATHEMY vivait déjà dans les abysses des multitudes forêts et de la solitude Finnoise dans le milieu des années 90. Entre 1993 et 1994, le groupe Finnois enregistra une démographie appelée The Goat Fucked The Lambs, du Black Metal cru et primitif comme on savait si bien le faire à cette époque. Mais leur première vrai démo naquit en 2002 avec Under The Sign of The Black Cover qui ne donna pas suite à grand chose. Le groupe ne fait pas grand chose entre 1995 et 2001 lorsque Goath travailla sur d’autres projets . Dégoûté et déçu par la tournure que prenait le Black à cette époque, il décide de se retirer du milieu qu’il considère comme empoisonné et gangrené. Il faut attendre cette année pour revoir GOATHEMY réapparaître dans le monde du Black Metal underground avec leur vrai premier album Frostland.
On retrouve GOATHEMY avec un line-up se composant de Goath (voix/guitares), son frère Mr.Thing (Guitares), Dark (voix féminines) Bargor (basse) et Ghost (batterie). Première bonne idée, Aucun recours aux synthés. Le Black ainsi est plus brut et cash, l’essence même du Black Metal est présente et toutes les lignes mélodiques sont engendrées par les guitares et autres basses, comme KEEP OF KALESSIN par exemple. Seconde bonne idée, L’emploi de lignes vocales féminines proférées par Dark confère aux morceaux des atmosphères uniques et des mélodies intéressantes avec sa voix claire. Ces apparitions se font avec parcimonies et n’alourdissent aucunement les morceaux, bien au contraire. On pense notamment à des titres comme « Rebellion Morningstar », « Hands of Immortality ».
Le titre d’ouverture « New Era of Disgust » nous fait penser à une improbable rencontre entre le Black Metal le plus underground et PLACEBO ! Etonnant, mais les intonations de voix sur le refrain me font simplement penser à Brian Molko, leader du groupe de Pop Anglais. « Cursing The Venomous Waters » réconcilie tout le monde et met les choses à plat. On a droit à de bons morceaux, « Frostland » et son mid-tempo ravageur et fédérateur montre le goût de GOATHEMY pour les ambiances éthérées et fluides.
Nous avons droit à neuf sagas de Metal Anti-Chrétien transcendées par des changements de riffs omniprésents et de réelles idées au niveau des arrangements. Bien évidemment, on parle de Black Metal primaire, il ne faut pas non plus s’attendre à du Joe Satriani au niveau des guitares, donc si les rythmiques semblent parfois répétitives, elles contribuent néanmoins à créer des ambiances froides et glaciales comme il se doit. Les morceaux montent en puissance, si bien que l’on est capté par les titres le long des ces quarante minutes. Dans les moins, les mixages de la basse et de la batterie auraient tout de même pu être mis un peu plus en avant, car eu égard à l’expérience des Finnois, on aurait pu s’attendre à un meilleur résultat.
Produit par le groupe lui-même et sorti sur le propre label des frères Goath et Mr. Thing, GOATHEMY livre au final avec ce Frostland un album de Black Metal puissant qui tient largement la route. En attendant la suite…
