Créé en 1998 par Metatron (chant), THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL poursuit sa voie dans l'underground avec Damascus Steel, un album s'inscrivant dans la droite ligne des précédents avec un mélange subtil et inhabituel entre Black Metal et Space Rock sur fond d'imagerie moyenâgeuse.
Comme indiqué sur son site, le groupe compose sous l'emprise du hashish. Ceci explique sans doute cela. En effet, dire que la musique de THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL est monotone serait un bel oxymore tant les breaks, parfois radicaux, sont fréquents : du rock psychédélique digne d'un PINK FLOYD période Atom Heart Mother ("Satanic Black Nubian Praraohs"), à la batterie dysharmonique sur "Creed Of Abraham", en passant par des riffs Punk (à l'intro de "Hollow Womb Of Suicide", on croirait écouter du BERURIER NOIR avant de passer à un chant féminin sur fond de beats technoïsants et de plages de claviers envoûtants), l'orgue Hammond ("The Gods Who Mocks Us"), la trompette ("Satanic Black Nubian Praraohs"), les bongos, la cithare, les violons... il y en a pour tous les goûts. A noter aussi la reprise de "Wonderful World" de Louis Armstrong dont les paroles ont été totalement pervertis pour l'occasion. Sur l'ensemble de l'album, les vocaux de Metatron, plus souvent psalmodiés que chantés, se font d'ailleurs plus volontiers rocailleux que typiquement Black.
Dès le second morceau, "Creed Of Abraham" et son déferlement Black, la production montre cependant ses limites : pas totalement incompatible avec la démarche du combo, elle finit par nuire à certains morceaux. Notamment au niveau de la batterie, beaucoup trop sourde, alors que la basse, assurée par Alan Davey (HAWKWIND), a su pour sa part profiter du mixage.
La musique de THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL n'est pas facile d'accès, loin de là, et pourrait être comparé à du BORKNAGAR version underground. Sa thématique pour autant reste des plus traditionnelles puisque, à l'instar de nombreux groupes de Black, le combo estime que la religion ne représente pas le salut de l'Humanité, mais sa perte. Le ton est donné dès le morceau d'ouverture ("Psalm 666") qui reprend un discours de Bush, sur fond de sonorités arabisantes suivi d'extraits de reportages télé et de pleurs d'enfants.
Ne boudons pas notre plaisir : le groupe parvient, après plusieurs écoutes, à nous emmener dans son voyage psychédélique, les riffs de Huw Lloyd Langton, lui aussi issu des rangs d'HAWKWIND (dont le morceau "Sword Of The East" est une reprise) savent faire mouche (les envolées épiques sur "Creed Of Abraham") mais l'absence d'homogénéité, qui pour certains sera le témoignage d'une créativité sans bornes, confère à la musique de THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL un caractère hermétique qui ne pourra satisfaire tout le monde. A réserver aux fanatiques de musique d'avant-garde.
