Si le Metal extrême s’illustre par la redondance des noms de groupes à tendance morbido-satanique (MORBID ANGEL, DEICIDE…), le Hardcore New School se ferait plutôt remarquer pour l’étrangeté des noms proposés (CONVERGE, NORMA JEAN…). C’est ainsi que débarquent les virginiens de SCARLET avec leur nouvel opus This Was Always Meant To Fall Appart.
Première surprise, premier étonnement. L’album débute sur une Intro assez planante, avec guitare Emo très aérienne et un chant « Glassjawesque » étonnant. Nous qui croyions avoir à faire à du Hardcore bien violent, on se retrouve un peu désemparé face a cet « Obsolete » qui entame l’album. On n’est cependant pas déçu car la mélodie évite la facilité et la banalité. Cette intro se révèle donc assez intéressante. Et ce n’est qu’en atteignant le second morceau « Swarm Manifesto » que l’on retombe enfin sur nos pattes. On retrouve SCARLET dans son registre Hardcore Chaotique assez violent avec quelques relents Emo adoucissant (oui, comme le shampoing), sans oublier bien sûr les influences Metal qui agrémentent le tout. Dans le pays complexe du Mathcore dominé par THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, SCARLET se placerait un peu en marge de la dominante. En effet, même si on ressent vraiment les sonorités stridentes, avec les rythmiques compliquées et le chant bien hurlé, on situe là dans un registre beaucoup plus accessible (bien plus que Miss Machine de THE DILLINGER, c’est dire !). Le chant oscille entre Screamo et Emo, idem pour les guitares, ce qui donne au final un ensemble un peu différent de ce que l’on a l’habitude d’entendre, tout en restant très cohérent. Les petites touches Electro/Indus ne feront que renforcer cette impression. Le son quant à lui reste très conventionnel, avec une production très actuelle qui met bien la puissance en avant.
Evidemment, SCARLET est loin de révolutionner le genre, mais il a le mérite de tenter de proposer quelque chose de nouveau, avec son lot de subtilités qui –espérons-le– lui évitera de tomber dans la masse informe des groupes de Hardcore New School qui tentent de se faire un nom.
