ASES est a été fondé des cendres de plusieurs formations telles que SANG SUR ou NECROPHAGE en 1996. Regroupés autour de Necros (voix), Donn (batterie), Lord Schrodinger (guitares), Infest (guitares) et Neimheidh (basse), ce groupuscule Français exécute un Black Pagan volontiers sale et surtout plus proche du Black que du Pagan. Auteurs d’un premier album Neverending Warlust en 2001, ASES s’inscrit dans un Black Metal violent, dur et aux sonorités rêches. Nous retrouvons ainsi cette dimension dans leur second album sobrement intitulé Of Moonlords and Sunwheelwarriors sorti il y a deux ans. Par ailleurs, les ambiances et les chœurs types Viking et les mélodies de guitares (arpèges) montrent tout de même que l’on a affaire à un groupe orienté Pagan : le titre éponyme en est la meilleur illustration.
La violence d’exécution est un terme que l’on peut également attribuer aux compositions de ASES. Leur idéologie à la gloire des anciens guerriers Celtiques et Germains se retranscrit surtout au niveau des paroles et de l’artwork du CD, les arrangements s’axant plus sur les plans brutaux que sur des parties orchestrales. Hargneux, les titres proposés par les Divinités ASES se montrent implacables, avec des morceaux comme « Voices of Vengeance » ou « Burn The Neo-Hippies ». Le titre « The Call of The Emperor » insiste sur la partie sombre de ASES et surtout l’outro de l’album, « The Emperors ‘Theme », une marche funèbre, guerrière. Un titre prenant et splendide.
Toujours à la gloire des Anciens Grands Guerriers du Vieux Monde, les compositions de ASES baignent dans le sang versé par ces glorieux prédécesseurs. Toujours attiré par le côté le plus ténébreux, le quintet Gaulois s’en sort avec les honneurs au travers de ce second album. Les riffs saignants et vengeurs associés aux voix d’outre-tombe et des complaintes guerrières illustrent pleinement la façon de jouer de ASES. Les titres sont plaisants, entraînants et bien exécutés, tombant rarement dans la redondance et l’ennui. Par exemple, un morceau comme « Sons of The Earth » en est le parfait exemple. Aidés par une production honorable, Necros et ses acolytes fournissent un jeu particulièrement vigoureux. A la limite, le titre « The Patriots » semble être le plus linéaire et le plus fade de l’opus.
ASES démontre toutes ces qualités d’exécution, d’arrangements et de sens du riff. Second album à la qualité indéniable, le Pagan Metal a de beaux jours devant lui en France, vu la qualité et la profusion de grandes formations hexagonales (BELENOS, HIMINBJORG, NYDVIND). A ce rythme là, ASES les rejoindra forcément…
