EVIL ONE est une formation de Death Mélodique existant depuis 1997 et ayant vu le jour en région Parisienne. Cependant, après de multiples soubresauts et remaniements de line-up, la composition actuelle des Franciliens ne date que de 2005. A ce jour, EVIL ONE possède à son compteur trois albums en comptant Shades of Life sorti cette année. Le groupe a pour sa part déjà réalisé les albums Dark Flames en 2002 et Below deux ans plus tard.
Les morceaux de EVIL ONE se basent sur des riffs tantôt Heavy tantôt Death, avec des passages Thrashy, l’ensemble imprégné d’un sens de la mélodie évident renforcé par les parties vocales féminines de Klair, façon THEATRE OF TRAGEDY, pour donner une idée plus précise. Ainsi, ces lignes vocales mélodiques et suaves contrastent avec les vocaux gutturaux des musiciens. C’est le cas avec le morceau « Who Draws the Lines » qui illustre parfaitement le style de EVIL ONE. Dès lors, les bons morceaux de Death Mélodique s’enchaînent avec les titres « The Artist » ou « Illusions ». EVIL ONE ose même proposer un morceau Rock Heavy Boogy aux accents Death mélo : « World Collapse : part 1 ». Une très bonne idée ! Du point de vue de l’interprétation, les musiciens Français s’en tirent raisonnablement bien que parfois les lignes vocales de Klair manquent de puissance et d’assurance, portant ainsi préjudice à la qualité des morceaux. De même que le son des guitares (surtout les parties rythmiques), qui elles, auraient pu être mieux travaillées et plus rageuses. Sans être raté, loin de là, Shades of Life est un album mitigé où de bons titres efficaces côtoient des morceaux plus transparents et dispensables comme « Think For Yourself » ou « Echoes ». Par ailleurs, la production sans paraître géniale ni parfaite se veut honnête.
Bien que jouissant d’une certaine expérience avec trois albums studios à la clé, EVIL ONE montre à travers ce « Shades of Life » les limites de son style musical. Tantôt efficace et prenant, tantôt vide et ennuyant, l’album est à la mesure de l’interprétation : le tout ou rien. Les musiciens font tout leur possible pour masquer les carences de la lead vocale, malgré tout le potentiel et la volonté de celle-ci. Il y a fort à parier que quand elle aura acquis les techniques nécessaires à cette forme de chant si difficile, les arrangements de EVIL ONE n’en seront que bien meilleurs ! Affaire à suivre…
