On se demande comment Joe Lynn Turner trouve le temps de participer à autant de projets. Toujours est-il que l’ancien chanteur de RAINBOW sort encore un nouvel album, cette fois avec l’étiquette SUNSTORM.
L’origine de ces compositions est assez ancienne puisqu’elles ont été écrites au milieu des années 80 et devaient figurer sur le successeur de son premier album solo, Rescue You. Des problèmes de label empêchèrent Turner de les enregistrer et elles restèrent dans un tiroir durant toutes ces années.
SUNSTORM plonge donc allègrement dans le passé pour nous livrer un album à la fois énergique et mélodique qui possède beaucoup de qualités. Les compositions sont assez simples, elles utilisent les ficelles qui étaient à la mode dans les années 80. Sur ce point elles devraient satisfaire les amateurs de cette période. Des titres comme « Night Moves », « This Is My Heart » ou « Fist Full Of Heat » marient adroitement l’énergie du Hard Rock et de belles mélodies. « Fame And Fortune » est imprégnée de la patte de son compère et ami Jim Peterik qu’il fréquentait à l’époque ; de même que plusieurs ballades. C’est sur ce dernier point que l’on peut adresser un reproche puisqu’on en dénombre pas moins de 6 sur un album comptant 12 titres. Or toutes ne sont pas du niveau de « Heart Over Mind ».
L’interprétation est sans faille ; Joe Lynn Turner n’a plus a démontrer la qualité de son chant mais il n’avait pas donné le meilleur de lui-même sur son projet précédent avec Akira Kajiyama. Ici le résultat est très supérieur.
Dennis Ward (PINK CREAM 69) fait un excellent travail de production, parvenant remettre le son 80’s au goût du jour sans le dénaturer.
