Créé vers la fin de l’année 1996, OMNIUM GATHERUM vient, comme beaucoup des groupes de Metal, de Scandinavie et plus précisément de Su… non de Finlande ! Fièrement signé chez Nuclear Blast, le groupe jouit d’une réputation grandissante grâce à un style musical très en vogue en ce moment, un Death mélodique à la SOILWORK ou encore IN FLAMES. Sorti très vite après son premier album : Spirits and August Light ; Years In Waste est dans la lignée de son prédécesseur sans aucune contestation possible.
Musicalement, le Thrash/Death mélodique de OMNIUM GATHERUM est rempli d’atmosphères progressives mélangées à des mélodies assez Heavy sous un chant typiquement Death. Derrière Years In Waste se cachent de nombreuses heures de travail, mais ce qui est sûr, c’est que l’ombre de SOILWORK plane très près des 10 titres présents sur le skeud. Ce groupe a une influence considérable sur de nombreux groupes Metal de la scène actuelle. L’alternance d’un chant Death avec des parties en chant clair est vraiment à la mode, il en va de même pour les riffs de guitare : les riffs mélodiques sont coupés par d’autres beaucoup plus saccadés et brutaux. Le son est bien évidemment gras et saturé ! Et bien Years In Waste d’OMNIUM GATHERUM est un clone ou un mélange des opus les plus récents de SOILWORK, mais en moins inspiré. C’est du plagiat dans les règles de l’art jusqu’aux moindres détails. Même si les morceaux sont plus complexes et plus difficiles à assimiler.
Ok la production est en béton, parfaite, le son est très puissant et clair à la fois, ok les compos sont très travaillées, et il y a quelques bonnes idées dans les rythmiques des titres comme « No Moon & No Queen » ou « Waste of Bereavement », mais cela est largement insuffisant. Les mélodies sont plates et il est difficile de trouver des accroches positives dans les morceaux. Les intros des morceaux « Black Seas Cry » et « More Withering » sont tout simplement inutiles.
En bref, le gros point positif présent sur cet album est la qualité du son et du mixage qui viennent du fameux Finnvox studio à Helsinki en Finlande : on peut enfin entendre le bassiste sur ce style de musique ! Mais est-ce que cela suffira ?
