Dès les premières secondes du morceau d’ouverture, « Periscope », on reconnaît immédiatement les sons de clavier si caractéristique ainsi que les morceaux alambiqués d’ANDROMEDA. Après un Extension of The Wish prometteur et un To Is One difficilement digérable, le combo suédois livre un troisième album plus direct, plus puissant, tout en gardant les qualités des précédents albums. Structures complexes, solos de folies, twins harmonies et recherche de sonorités originales, nous sommes bien dans l’univers du Metal Progressif. Mais ANDROMEDA réussi à garder un univers bien à lui, facilement reconnaissable. Cet univers est dû en grande partie aux sons de clavier toujours innovants du génial Martin Heddin (voir « Blink of an eye », le morceau qui clôture l’album de façon majestueuse). La voix sublime de David Fremberg captive par son timbre chaleureux, en particulier sur des titres comme « The Idden Place ». Le nouveau bassiste, Fabian Gustavsson instaure des lignes de basse recherchées et mélodiques, accompagnant parfaitement Johan Reinholdtz (guitare). Le jeu de ce dernier est à l’image de l’album, moins démonstratif et beaucoup plus efficace et original que son prédécesseur. Pour finir, les plans de batterie de Thomas Lejon sont particulièrement intéressants et donnent relief et tenue à toutes les compositions.
Vous l’avez compris, ANDROMEDA donne toujours dans le Metal plus que Progressif mais les fans de la première heure pourront être déçus par le virage que prend le groupe, moins technique et plus accessible. Chimera serait donc l’album de la consécration, mélangeant harmonieusement mélodie et technique ? Et bien non ! bien qu’il soit plus efficace, il manque encore ce petit quelque chose qui fait que l’album est vraiment réussi. Ne nous trompons pas, Chimera est un très bon album qui mérite le coup d’oreille, mais ce n’est pas encore avec cette pièce qu’ANDROMEDA rentrera au panthéon des groupes de Metal Prog’.
