Depuis leur début en 1992 en tant que groupe Underground de Tumba, dans la banlieue sud de Stockholm, les Suédois d’ AMON AMARTH ont réussi à s’établir comme l’un des groupes les plus importants de Death Metal en Europe grâce à de solides albums et à des tournées à gogo réussies. Ce qui les a place d’emblée à part de la scène Death est l’utilisation de la mythologie Scandinave et de son imagerie dans les paroles et l’artwork, en ayant recours à des morceaux épiques marquants à la fois bien barbares et épiques. Que de chemin parcouru depuis leur premier album Once Sent From The Golden Hall en 1998 et depuis jalonné par de bonnes livraisons bien homogènes comme Versus The World en 2002 ou Fate of Norns il y a de cela deux ans.
Ainsi, With Oden on Our Side, leur dernier ode à la gloire de Wotan, ne dérogera pas à la règle et aux codes guerriers du quintet, sauf que là c’est du très lourd. Johann Hegg (chant) n’a jamais aussi bien beuglé que sur cet album et la variété des mélodies, des riffs, des plans de batterie et des ambiances perpétrées par ses camarades de campagnes en fait à coup sûr l’un des meilleurs opus des Nordiques.
Certes, les opus d’AMON AMARTH peuvent sembler parfois redondant et se ressembler les uns les autres, mais pour ce sixième opus, les Suédois ont frappé un grand coup de mjolnir. Le fait que Odin soit à leur côté doit y être pour quelque chose mais toujours est-il que les neufs titres présents sur cette rondelle sont tout simplement excellents. Ne pâtissant d’aucune baisse de régime et orné d’une production constamment à la hauteur de la puissance de feu des Scandinaves, cet opus recèle de morceaux de bravoures à l’image de « Valhall Awaits Me » ou « Gods of War Arise », tout en flirtant avec des titres d’une violence peu coutumière pour le groupe comme sur les titres « Asator » ou encore « Cry of The Black Birds ». D’autre part, AMON AMARTH a semble-t-il voulu axé son travail sur des compositions plus fouillées et étudiées tout en conservant le panache si propre à leur style, tel le titre « Hermod’s Ride to Hel - Lokes Treachery Part I ». Par ailleurs, on sent que les soli sont bien plus matures et enflammés, à l’image du titre que porte l’album ou sur le titre le plus "calme" de la galette, « Under The Northern Star ».
On peut dès lors affirmer que le groupe conduit par Johann Hegg a retrouvé de l’inspiration pour insuffler un vent de fraîcheur sur ces nouvelles compositions. De mieux en mieux arrangés, on sent de plus un niveau technique plus harmonieux ce qui n’est pas pour déplaire dans un genre où les aspects martiaux des rythmiques doivent à tout prix être respectés à la lettre. De quoi s’attirer de nouveaux fans puisque en dehors du fait d’être un très bon album de Metal Viking, il en regorge une efficacité et une sincérité à toute épreuve et, bénéficiant en plus du charisme de son leader, on imagine déjà l’ampleur et le délire que prendront certains morceaux sur scène.
