Vous savez ce que c’est, après avoir fait la fête, on a la gueule de bois et on se rend compte qu’il faut tout ranger. Eh bien c’est ce qui arrive à THUNDER. Après deux albums festifs, énergiques et gais, Shooting At The Sun et The Magnificent Seventh, le groupe a besoin d’un peu de temps pour récupérer. Alors il nous livre cet album fortement teinté de Blues. L’ensemble n’est pas maladroit et l’on voit bien que THUNDER aime ce style et le maîtrise bien. Mais ça on le savait déjà ; par le passé, les Anglais ayant déjà teinté leur Hard Rock d’une grosse dose de Blues. Sur cet album le Blues prédomine et l’on peut regretter le déséquilibre qui en découle. Les titres efficaces et mordants ont tendance à traîner en longueur et son dépourvus de cet aspect dynamique et joyeux qui était l’atout des albums précédents. Trois ballades viennent plomber davantage l’ambiance.
Que l’on ne s’y trompe pas, Robert Johnson’s Tombstone est un bon album, mais le groupe semble s’être enfermé dans un carcan : puisque c’est Blues, il faut effacer la gaieté des albums passé. Du coup, les gros points forts que sont « Last Man Standing », « Dirty Dream » et surtout « The Devil Made Me Do It » côtoient des titres assez fades.
Pour info, Robert Johnson était un célèbre bluesman mort assassiné dans un bar glauque et dont on ne sait pas où se trouve la tombe (d’où le titre). La légende veut qu’il ait vendu son âme au diable en échange du talent et de la gloire (d’où la pochette). Cette histoire a inspiré le film Crossroad avec Steve Vai.
