AGRESSOR est au Death Metal, ce que la gryphée, également appelée « ongle du Diable », est à l’évolution de l’espèce : un de ses plus anciens représentants, encore en activité aujourd'hui. La comparaison est sans doute un peu appuyée mais elle est à l’image de l’influence que le groupe a exercée sur de nombreuses formations et un style en général.
6 ans se sont écoulés depuis Medieval Rites, 20 années ont passé depuis la création d’AGRESSOR, pourtant Alex (guitare et chant), seul membre restant du line-up d'origine, est toujours fièrement au poste et il ne s’est pas assagi, loin de là.
A l’écoute de Deathreat, on est frappés par la diversité des titres, comme si Alex tenait à montrer que, malgré des périodes de silences plus ou moins longues (6 ans également entre Medieval Rites et son prédécesseur, Symposium Of Rebirth, sur lesquels le combo avait déjà eu recours à des orchestrations classiques), le groupe n’était pas resté sourd aux évolutions connues par le genre et qu’il était en mesure d’exceller dans chacune d’entre elles.
Le titre éponyme ouvre l’album, une manière de bien faire passer le message : AGRESSOR va droit au but. Dès les premières notes, des riffs aux allures d’essaims d’abeilles tueuses s’abattent sur l’auditeur. Un mid tempo lourd et malsain alterne avec des accélérations brutales et des solos débridés qui laissent peu de répit. La voix d’Alex fait toujours des merveilles et la production est énorme.
« When Darkness » évolue pour sa part dans un Death/Black tout aussi violent et des solos à faire pâlir tout apprenti thrasheur. « Nightmare Comes By » enchaîne avec son groove meurtrier. Première apparition de claviers atmosphériques et épiques sur « Warrior Heart », mais réduite au minimum syndical : c’est un fait, Deathreat est vraisemblablement l’opus le plus agressif enregistré par AGRESSOR à ce jour. Retour au Death/Black avec « Lust For The Flesh », « Giant Of Old » auxquels succèdent des morceaux Death sans concession, « War In Heaven », « Order Of Chaos », « Desolation »… et chez AGRESSOR, les compos les plus longues ne sont pas les moins apocalyptiques.
Le groupe clôt la marche avec un titre répondant au nom de « Agressor » : la messe est dite sur fond de riffs thrashisants. AGRESSOR est un grand groupe de Death. Point barre.
