Dans l’univers sombre du Death Metal, il y avait ceux qui suivaient la voie royale tracée des sillons des précurseurs, puis il y avait ceux qui, sans renier leurs racines, voulaient faire quelque chose de différents. Ainsi SUPURATION nous offrit ce joyau qu’est The Cube. Le groupe se permit de faire un concept album dans un style où on n’attendait pas forcément ce genre de chose. Et c’est une politique qu’ils gardèrent pour leurs albums futurs.
Tout commence par une introduction simple, sans saturation (« Prelude »). La plume qui glisse sur le papier rugueux se superpose à une voix parlée. L’ambiance est posée et la disto arrive par la suite, nous renvoyant dans le fond de notre fauteuil (« The Elevation »). Et là, la marque de fabrique est posée. Des rythmiques simples mais puissantes, où la technicité n’est pas le but à atteindre. SUPURATION préfère poser leur atmosphère plutôt que de faire un déballage technique inutile. Une atmosphère sombre, angoissante, surprenante. Qui monte en intensité, tout en sauvegardant la continuité et l’intégrité sur tout l’album.
De vraies perles se trouvent sur cet album. On pourra citer « 1308.JP.08 », véritable concept à lui tout seul, où la guitare est vraiment réduite à sa plus simple expression et où le chant clair et monotone de Ludovic Loez fait froid dans le dos. Froid comme tout ce qui ressort de cet album. Froid comme la mort qui a pris le personnage de cette histoire. On ne peut pas non plus passer à côté du titre « The Cube », qui rassemble à lui tout seul toutes les qualités de cet album.
The Cube nous fait donc l’effet d’une bombe lancée dans un paysage Metal parfois un peu répétitif. Il produit, quelques années avant, le même effet qu’a put engendrer Terra Incognita de GOJIRA au moment de sa sortie. On sent que ce groupe ne sera décidément jamais comme les autres, pour notre plus grand plaisir.
