Il existe des groupes, des albums, dont il est assez difficile de parler. Non pas parce qu’on ne sait pas quoi dire, mais surtout parce qu’on ne sait par où commencer, comment présenter la chose, par quel bout prendre le bébé. Imperial Tzadik est un peu comme ça. Un album aux influences tellement diverses, se mélangeant dans un maelstrom confus et pourtant tellement parfaitement imbriqué, qu’on ne sait quel fil tirer pour commencer. Parce qu’en fonction du fil retenu, l’impression générale risque d’être différente. Alors, avant de rentrer plus dans le détail, je vous livre la première idée qu’il m’est venue après la première écoute : quand TYPE O NEGATIVE (époque Bloody Kisses) bœuf avec ANATHEMA (époque The Silent Enigma) et qu’ils rencontrent SWEAT SMOKE au carrefour. Bizarre en somme. Mais parlons un peu des morceaux.
Les premiers morceaux m’avaient fait l’effet d’un « sympa, mais peu mieux faire », la première fois. Je dois dire que j’ai vraiment été accroché à partir de « A Box In Ocean ». Ce mélange de Metal et de trip psychédélique sur la fin m’a fait littéralement voyager. C’est alors que mon oreille s’est tendue de manière beaucoup plus attentive. Enfin surtout beaucoup plus acquise. Et j’ai réussit à pénétrer l’univers mystérieux et décalé de ce groupe hors normes. De longues plages de guitare, puissantes, agressives, lascives. Des synthés envoûtants, pénétrants, subtils, insidieux par moments, voire fourbes, mais toujours là pour faire ressortir la quintessence du morceau. Et une voix… une voix qui m’a tout d’abord dérangé. Puis, j’ai compris. Elle n’est pas simplement là en tant que voix, mais bien en tant qu’un nouvel instrument, apportant sa propre richesse et sa propre musicalité, dissonante par moment.
À l’écoute de son long disque, on pourrait penser que l’on va s’ennuyer. Ce serait sans compter sur la richesse des compositions. Elles savent être tantôt agressives et plus rapides (« Liquid Machine X », « Temple Of Anarchist Empire »), tantôt teintées d’une sorte de sonorité primitive (« Tribal Misericordia »). Mais ce sont là les morceaux que je pourrais qualifier de « plus accessibles ». Les autres plongent leurs racines dans le génie des membres du groupe qui savent marier ce qu’ils aiment et en ressortir quelque chose de transcendant (une mention particulière à la fin de « Green Kommando », qui est vraiment un exemple parfait de ce mélange de Metal et d’autre chose… ici, de la guitare sèche type andalouse).
Je n’aurais que deux bémols sur ce disque. Le premier c’est le choix de la langue. Pourquoi chanter en anglais alors qu’Emmanuelson possède un accent franchouillard un peu trop prononcé ? La langue de Molière aurait été tout aussi bien adaptée pour entrer dans leur univers, me semble-t-il. La seconde c’est le choix, lors du mixage, de mettre la batterie un peu en second plan. Par moment, cela va bien, mais il faut parfois tendre un peu trop l’oreille pour l’apprécier à sa juste valeur.
Mais bon, ce sont là deux remarques qui n’empêcheront pas ceux qui le souhaitent d’engloutir Imperial Tzadik et sa musique décalée.
