La scène Black dans notre hexagone se porte relativement bien depuis quelques temps. Rien qu’à voir tous les groupes à succès du style comme ANOREXIA NERVOSA, TEMPLE OF BAAL, ARKHON INFAUSTUS, il n’est en rien surprenant de constater qu’un groupe comme THE OATH peut avoir à apporter quelque chose et à contribuer à la scène tout en évitant de grossir les rangs des groupes au talent réduit et hermétiques. Ce quatuor sorti du fin fond des ténèbres vit la lumière du jour en 1999. Originaires de Lyon, THE OATH propose pour faire simple et non caricatural un judicieux mélange de Black symphonique et de Dark accompagnées de plans bien Heavy. Jamais épargnés par les problèmes de line-up afin de trouver la bonne formule depuis leurs débuts, il semble que l’avènement de la stabilité soit arrivé à force de persévérance. Avec ce premier album The End of Times qui ne paie pas de mines à la première vision, on est loin du compte car du niveau du contenu, THE OATH tient la dragée haute et peut rivaliser avec bon nombre de formations actuelles du secteur. Le combo français avait déjà fait parlé de lui l’année même de sa formation par le biais d’une démo Présages…& Ténèbres, enregistrement qui permit au groupe de légitimement faire parler de lui dans les cercles restreints de l’underground.
Enregistré et mixé au Studio La Manufacture du Son (KEMET, TENEBRUM INFECTUS), leur sens du professionnalisme de cette auto production saute aux oreilles avec cette habilité dans la composition de morceaux percutants, dynamiques et bien construits. THE OATH fournit une matrice de Black léchée enrichie d’arrangements symphoniques habillant les morceaux de leur plus belle parure. On pense ainsi à des titres envoûtants comme « Amen », « Misanthropic », des morceaux Thrashy comme « Broken Hope », ou bien à des morceaux plus Heavy tels que « The Circle », « Holy Terror » ou encore « Without Control ». Quelques soli viennent ornementer les morceaux parvenant à en faire des titres plus aériens comme celui cité précédemment. On retrouve également des morceaux tirant plus vers le Black Horrifique comme « Fading Into Darkness », « The Oath » ou des titres plus mélancolique tels que l’intro du Thrashy « Empty Shell » ou « The Awakening ».
On ne peut qu’applaudir le travail fourni et leur souhaiter le succès et la renommée escomptée. THE OATH a su proposer des compositions travaillées et a su faire en sorte de tirer les morceaux vers le haut. Le niveau technique des musiciens est à la hauteur des arrangements écrits. Les lignes vocales de Destroyer sont assez étoffées pour faire passer les émotions requises dans ce genre d’opus. Un exercice de style souvent galvaudé où les clichés et les poses ridicules tirent souvent les groupes en question vers le bas. THE OATH ne fait pas partie de cette catégorie. Gageons que cela dure, au vu du résultat de ce The End of Times, ce serait une cruelle déception! Espérons qu’ils feront le serment de reconduire leurs compositions sur ce chemin perdu de la fin des temps.
