Sixième album du groupe ICED EARTH, Horror Show est un concept album parlant des plus grands monstres des films d’horreur. Le loup garou, jack l’éventreur, la momie et Dracula s’invitent sur le disque pour tenter une nouvelle expérience, réussie ? Je vais vous éclaircir le tableau, ou devrais-je dire la scène.
Situons le contexte, le groupe n’a pas sorti d’album depuis 3 ans. Ce Horror Show fait suite à un des plus grands albums du groupe, Something Wicked This Way Comes plus qu’un album, un monument pour le monde du Metal. Lourd passé pour ce nouveau disque. 11 titres dont une reprise de IRON MAIDEN, « Transylvania ». ICED EARTH joue du Power Metal. Riffs prenant, chant clair, double guitare, jeu de batterie à la double et basse très présente.
Pour être franc et direct, je dirais que cet album est assez inégal. Loin d’être le meilleur album du groupe, Horror show se défend, mais ne révolutionne pas le groupe. On sent les titres assez atmosphériques, jouant sur des intros particulières où souvent la basse s’invite et se fait vivement entendre « Wolf », « Damien », « Im-Ho-Tep (Pharaoh's Curse) ». Le jeu de guitare rythmique de Jon Schaffer est inimitable, écoutez l’intro de « Jack » pour vous en convaincre, une vraie machine à riff. Le jeu de Richard Christy (batteur) est très bon, écoutez moi son jeu sur « Jeckyl & Hyde » ou encore « Damien ».
Horror Show manque peut être d’un peu plus de très grands titres. Un ou deux titres épiques lui auraient certainement donné une meilleure place dans la discographie d’ICED EARTH. Il est dommage de retrouver sur cet album une qualité de titres inconstante. « Ghost of Freedom » est une petite ballade acoustique hors sujet car ne parlant pas de monstres du cinéma, mais du patriotisme Américain qui fait assez pâle figure, car trop prévisible. Je retiendrais quand même la partie chant qui est magnifique. L’album possède toutefois « Dracula ». Semi ballade fantastique à vous faire hérisser les cheveux sur la tête. Dracula demandant si l’on croit en l’amour est un moment anodin, mais tellement jouissif. L’ambiance de ce titre me fait réellement penser que c’est l’un des plus beaux titres que je n’ai jamais écouté. Le duo du morceau « The phantom of opera » où une invitée donne le ton à Matthew Barlow est somptueux. Ce chanteur fait des miracles, portez votre attention au break de cette chanson, magistral. Ce break est rempli de poésie et ces effets de guitare sont saisissants. Cela nous donne envie de fermer les yeux et de nous laisser rêver.
Parlons un instant du chant. Matthew Barlow est sans conteste un des meilleurs chanteurs de Metal au monde. Capable d’atteindre les aigus comme les graves les plus sombres, ce chanteur hors pairs défend (défendais car il n’est plus chanteur de Metal aujourd’hui) les valeurs du Metal. Ce chanteur charismatique à la chevelure imposante est à comparer sans aucun souci à d’autres plus renommés comme Bruce dickinson.
En tant qu’album concept, Jon Schaffer (guitare rythmique) a porté l’idée jusque dans les titres. Les somptueuses ambiances de « Wolf » et « Im-Ho-Tep (Pharaoh's Curse) » ne vous laisseront pas de marbre. Les chœurs de « Damien » finiront par vous convaincre que cet album a peut être sa place dans votre CD thèque. Indispensable pour tout fan d’ICED EARTH, à conseiller pour les autres, mais je déconseillerais de commencer par cet album pour découvrir ce groupe, préférez le Something Wicked This Way Comes.
