Le bruit d’une allumette que l’on craque, un silence et puis un déchaînement de batterie accompagnée d’une mélodie puissante et enlevée. Pas de doute, les pyromanes de BURNING POINT ont de nouveau frappé un grand coup. Feeding the Flames démarre donc, avec « Into the Fire », par un morceau incroyablement puissant et rythmé, rien ne semblant résister à la force conjuguée de Jari Kaiponen (batteur) et de ses comparses. Un peu étourdi par cette claque reçue en plein visage, on s’attend alors à un album qui sorte réellement des sentiers battus... mais force est rapidement de constater que la deuxième galette des finlandais ne tient pas toute ses promesses... et ce en dépit d’une entrée en matière qui laissait tout espérer.
Avec leur premier album Salvation by Fire sorti en 2001, les BURNING POINT avaient déjà prouvé leur attachement à un power Metal massif et sans fioriture, aux antipodes de leurs compatriotes de STRATOVARIUS ou SONATA ARCTICA. Avec Feeding the Flames, la formation finlandaise persiste et signe. Ici, pas d’intros grandiloquentes, pas d’ambiances épiques théâtrales, pas de refrains enjoués, le groupe délivre un Metal simple, massif, straight to the [burning] point.
Oui mais voila, faute d’une réelle recherche musicale, le groupe tourne rapidement en rond. A trop vouloir sacrifier l’originalité au profit de la simplicité, BURNING POINT se prive d’une place méritée au premier rang de la scène Power Metal européenne. Et c’est d’autant plus dommage que l’album est techniquement remarquable ; les morceaux sont parfaitement exécutés, les riffs de qualité, tout s’enchaîne avec une impression de maîtrise totale. Les morceaux ne manquent d’ailleurs pas de souffle à l’image du chanteur Pete Ahonen dont la voix grave et puissante s’intègre parfaitement aux mélodies solides et énergiques de l’album.
Au final, on a donc affaire à un album réussi, maîtrisé, relativement jouissif musicalement mais pas suffisamment original pour devenir un incontournable du genre. On retiendra néanmoins l’excellent « Into the Fire », ainsi que l’énorme potentiel d’un groupe qui a tout pour s’imposer pour peu qu’il s’en donne les moyens.
