SHADOWS FALL, ça vous dit quelque chose ? Non ? Pourtant, ce groupe n’en est pas à son coup d’essai avec Threads Of Life. Mais, là où ils avaient réussit à passer entre les mailles de l’attention pendant des années, ils comptent bien rattraper leur retard avec cet album. Changement de label pour passer chez Roadrunner, une production impeccable, des compositions qui tuent. Tout est fait pour que cet album soit celui de la consécration mondiale. C’est tout le mal que je peux leur souhaiter.
Vous l’avez peut-être remarqué, je n’ai pas marqué Heavy Metal dans le genre de musique, tout simplement parce que SHADOWS FALL nous propose un mélange de Heavy Old School et de Metal contemporain avec beaucoup d’habilité. Les premiers riffs de « Redemption » le prouvent. Un gros son, de grosses guitares, une énorme batterie (double grosse caisse incluse, bien entendu) pour des riffs que n’auraient pas renié certains papis du rock. Pourtant, rapidement, on sent l’influence Metal qui arrive, par la double, justement, par les riffs plus syncopés, par la voix qui sait se faire plus agressive. Et puis, on revient vers du Heavy plus classique pendant quelques riffs. Et l’alternance fonctionne. On bouge la tête, on tape du pied, on mime notre fabuleux jeu de guitare devant la glace de la salle de bain, et on en redemande.
Là où on pourrait croire que les lascars vont se contenter des inspirations vieillottes remisent au goût du jour, ils nous mettent un « Failure Of The Devot » dans la tronche. Et c’est bon. Des couplets rapides, un refrain plus posé qui déchire, et des breaks que n’auraient pas reniés SEPULTURA (époque Arise) : une note tenue par une rythmique pour faire un pont où tout le monde respire en sautant en rythme (rappelez-vous « Dead Embryonic Cells » sur leur live mythique Under Siege – Live At Barcelona). D’autres titres sont remarquables sur le disque. Par exemple « Final Call », qui nous ballade avec ses changements de rythmes incessants, « Dread Uprising » qui, pour le coup, lorgne franchement du côté Metal pur. Et puis, il y a l’interlude « The Great Collapse », tout en finesse. À noter aussi une power ballade, « Another Lost Hero », que j’ai trouvé pour ma part assez fade. Pas nulle, il manque juste quelque chose pour en faire une bonne ballade. Je pense que Brian Fair n’est tout simplement pas dans sa partie quand il chante en très clair.
Au final, SHADOWS FALL nous gratifie quand même d’un très bon disque. Énorme dans sa production, sans réel faux pas. Bon, je voudrais être chiant je dirais qu’ils auraient pu se passer des solos qui sont parfois un peu approximatifs. Mais c’est vraiment si je veux être chiant. Parce que ce Threads Of Life met les points sur les « i » en ce qui concerne le talent du groupe.
