ONE MAN ARMY AND THE UNDEAD QUARTET (se) - Error In Evolution (2007)

Moins de 2 ans après la sortie de son premier opus, ONE MAN ARMY AND THE UNDEAD QUARTET, propose aujourd'hui son second album Error In Evolution. Si le groupe jouait un Thrash avec des influences Death, le groupe a adouci sa musique et a considérablement évolué. Autant sur 21st Century Killing Machine le groupe pratiquait un Thrash avec de grosses influences Death mélodique typiquement suédois, autant sur Error In Evolution, c’est toujours du Thrash mais les influences sont à chercher du côté du Heavy avec de belles mélodies au tempo ralenti.
Bien que pour des raisons commerciales, il est évidement mentionné dans la promo, sur la pochette, sur les affiches… que ONE MAN ARMY AND THE UNDEAD QUARTET est le groupe de l’ancien vocaliste de THE CROWN, Johan Lindstrand, la comparaison s’arrête de nouveau là, car seul le timbre de voix du chanteur est le point commun des deux groupes. Il est donc ridicule d’essayer de récupérer des fans de l’ancien groupe de Johan, car musicalement, cela n’a plus rien à voir, et ils seront forcément déçus. THE CROWN proposait un Death vigoureux aux forts accents Death, Error In Evolution est beaucoup plus calme et mélodieux. Les 10 morceaux peuvent même sembler assez mous à certain moment. L’ensemble est très compact, et cohérent, et c’est là le problème : aucun titre ne se démarque ou sort du lot. Ce second opus est plat, élémentaire sans aucune surprise, si bien que même si les mélodies sont gentillettes, une question revient sans cesse : « où est-ce que j’ai déjà entendu cela ??? ».
Le groupe n’a donc pas gommé les erreurs précédentes, au contraire… il a continué sa mutation vers une musique plus mélodique alors que les meilleurs moments du premier opus de ONE MAN ARMY AND THE UNDEAD QUARTET se situaient dans les passages les plus énervés.
Heureusement que le groupe jouit d’une production d’un très haut niveau : le son du groupe est vraiment réussi, chaque instrument bénéficie d’un traitement particulier qui lui permet d’être identifiable. De plus tout comme le premier opus, la pochette de Error In Evolution est réussi et offre une continuité avec 21st Century Killing Machine. Dommage car tout les ingrédients étaient réunis pour accoucher d’un bon album, mais le bas blesse avec des compositions pompeuses, peu inspirées et surtout fade sans relief.
