FOSCOR se présente comme un groupe espagnol originaire de Catalogne apparu au milieu des années 90 du côté de Barcelone. Le combo dont le patronyme signifie «ténèbres» en catalan nous livre avec Entrance The Shadows Village son premier véritable album après une démo en 2001 et un split CD en 2003 avec XERION. Le moins que l’on puisse dire est que le quartet catalan composé de Norax (voix), Falke (guitares, claviers) et Fiar (basse, claviers) aura mis le temps pour accoucher de ce premier méfait car effectivement, les titres ont été composés entre 1998 et 2001 alors que dans un second temps, le disque a été enregistré et produit par le groupe lui-même de 1999 à 2004.
Après cette brève rétrospective sur la genèse de FOSCOR, place maintenant aux succulentes et suaves ritournelles arrangées par FOSCOR : du bon Dark Black Metal des familles comme on le faisait dans les années 90. FOSCOR ne connaît pas le passage à l’an 2000 d’un point de vu musical. Le trio catalan reste bec et ongles fidèle à ses fondements et à ses idées au travers de ce village de l’ombre. Car de pénombres et ténèbres il est franchement question sur cet opus.
Pas vraiment renommé en terme de Black Metal, convenons que FOSCOR pourrait amplement prétendre au trône et ravir la couronne de souverain du Black Metal de l’autre côté des Pyrénées. Force est de constater que le trio catalan parvient aisément à recréer une atmosphère passéiste et nostalgique grâce au grain sec, rêche et aigu des guitares. Les riffs malsains et noirs associés à une boîte à rythmes programmée apportent aux morceaux une certaine aura de puissance et de mélancolie, ceci à défaut d’être inspiré et original.
Les claviers aux ambiances médiévales sont utilisés avec parcimonie et à bon escient (pas aussi généreux et poussés que WONGRAVEN pour exemple mais les esquisses sur les derniers morceaux sont plutôt réussies). De plus l’aspect Pagan offre des morceaux pêchus, hargneux et noirâtres. L’intro typique pose le décor tandis que le titre suivant « Inferus (Dungeons & Caves) » est le parfait exemple d’un morceau Dark Black raw et crade aux arrangements sensiblement froids (occasionnés par les classiques arpèges et les nappes de claviers) et les susurrements à la BURZUM. Dans la même veine, on retrouvera « Old Wind’s Revenge » au riff cradingue et au climat à la limite du Black’n Roll. « Lunar Landscapes » est quant à lui l’un des titres les plus abouti et poursuit ainsi ce chemin scabreux creusé par FOSCOR. Les titres sont ainsi à féoder avec Dark Medieval Times de SATYRICON. On ne connaîtrait pas le groupe, on pourrait aisément croire qu’il s’agit d’un quelconque combo nordique datant de 1992. Quant au restant des morceaux, ils sont basiques et conventionnels excepté « The Sorrow of Delight », un bon morceau de Dark Black Metal.
Un bon album dans le genre, parfois brouillon mais qui nous laisse un peu sur notre faim car dix ans de composition pour ce résultat certes honnête, c’est quand même plutôt léger les gars…
