Huit ans après The Inexorable, ANGEL CORPSE, comme de nombreux autres groupes, a succombé à l’appel de la reformation. En trois albums seulement, les Américains ont marqué au fer rouge la scène Death/Black des années 1990. Les raisons de ce retour nous importent peu tant que le résultat est au rendez-vous. Of Lucifer And Lightning reprend là où les armes avaient été déposées près de dix ans plus tôt. ANGEL CORPSE n’a rien perdu de sa verve blasphématoire et, à cet égard, la pochette n’est pas qu’un simple affichage. Côté musique, on retrouve en effet les vocaux et le phrasé si particuliers de Pete Helemkamp, à mi-chemin entre le Black, le Death et le prêche antichrétien ; les guitares de Gene Palubicki, aux riffs d’une diabolique perversité, sans oublier les solos qui viennent vous cingler comme des coups de fouet ; les nostalgiques se réjouiront en outre de retrouver derrière les fûts John Longstreth, marteleur attitré sur les deux premiers albums du combo, Hammer Of Gods et Exterminate. Le résultat est une trinité mise au service du Malin. Le tout est en outre enveloppé dans une production compacte, puissante mais délibérément old school, grésillante comme le bûcher allumé sous les derniers vestiges de la chrétienté. L’album est relativement court mais ANGEL CORPSE sait varier les tempos et c’est à l’occasion de ces breaks, sur « Saints Of Blasphemy » ou encore « Shining One », que la formation nous frappe en plein ventre avec une masse. En matière de satanisme, bien qu’ANGEL CORPSE soit arrivé après DEICIDE, le trio nous donne le sentiment d’être le théoricien tandis que DEICIDE serait l’exécutant, comme si Pete Helemkamp avait lui-même gravé la croix inversée sur le front de Glen Benton. Tout est dit : ANGEL CORPSE nous offre un retour en force. Les ligues évangélistes américaines ont du boulot devant elles...
