Alors que TYPE O NEGATIVE sort son Bloody Kisses, le batteur Sal Abruscato part faire les sessions studio d’un jeune groupe, LIFE OF AGONY. À l’aise dans le concept et dans le groupe, il l’intègrera finalement de manière définitive par la suite. Il faut dire que TYPE O NEGATIVE ne prêtera pas que Sal pour cet album puisque la production est dans les mains de Josh Silver, claviériste de TYPE O. Seulement, les deux groupes n’ont pas grand-chose en commun à part ces deux là. En effet, là où l’un officie plutôt dans un Metal Gothique à tendance Doom par moment, l’autre est plus dans un mélange Hardcore et Metal.
River Runs Red est avant tout un concept album né de la créativité de Alan Roberts, le bassiste du groupe. Comme le titre l’indique, on parlera des rivières de sang qui coulent des veines de jeunes paumés. D’ailleurs, les interludes sont là pour montrer la vie d’un jeune dont tout ce qui l’entoure est pourri. Des parents qui s’engueulent à longueur de journée et lui polluent la vie, une copine qui le largue, un boss qui le jette. Tout ça pour finir dans une baignoire avec les veines tranchées (le « plic ploc » que l’on peut entendre sur la plage « Friday » est assez glaçant). Les morceaux du disque parlent donc de mal-être et de l’envie que tout s’arrête. Les membres disent s’être inspiré de connaissances pour les paroles. Glauque.
À part le gros son qui s’en dégage (Silver oblige), ce qui marque rapidement l’auditeur, c’est la voix de Keith Caputo. Tout d’abord pénétrante, elle devient vite agaçante par le timbre singulier qui ne varie pas. D’un autre côté, elle est parfaite pour transporter ces émotions vives de mal de vivre. Mais sur la longueur de l’album, elle est un peu lourdingue. Ce qu’on notera aussi, ce sont les changements constants de tempo durant les morceaux. Accélérations brutales puis ralentissements tout en douceur. Comme une marque de fabrique de cet album. Les rythmiques sont simples mais foutrement efficaces. Joey Z. à la guitare ne s’encombre pas de fioritures inutiles et taille dans l’essentiel pour amener à foutre mal à l’aise ou à donner envie de se jeter dans une fosse pleine à craquer de jeunes tout aussi déchaînés. Et Sal, derrière ses fûts, donne le ton juste à l’ensemble. Une belle symbiose que ces quatre jeunes gens nous ont produits pour leur premier album.
L’avenir du groupe sera plus chaotique, mais ce premier album, malgré ses défauts, restera un disque à écouter. Surtout pour son premier morceau, « This Time ».
