Dans la vie privée, Dennis Frederikson et Tommy Denander sont des types sympas. Je suis même sûr qu’ils connaissent des blagues que je ne connais pas. Mais bon, côté musique, ils feraient bien d’espacer un peu leur rythme de sortie. Parce que ce n’est pas la créativité qui les étouffe !
L’un et l’autre ont un cv impressionnant et ont participé à un nombre incroyable de projets. Du coup on peut se demander si ce duo constitue vraiment, pour l’un comme pour l’autre, une priorité. Car on a pu les apprécier tous les deux séparément avec TOTO et RADIOACTIVE, respectivement. Mais ce nouvel album ne livre vraiment pas grand-chose à se mettre sous la dent. C’est bourré de bonnes intentions, c’est plein de gentilles mélodies, mais c’est tellement dénué d’originalité qu’à la fin on fini par le remarquer.
Tout débute avec ce pathétique « Let Him Go » dont le riff est tellement répétitif qu’il en devient agaçant au bout de 45 secondes. Et ils essaient de nous le refourguer sur « Crossing Over » !
Qu’ils œuvrent dans les ballades ou dans le Rock plus vitaminé, on n’a réellement aucune occasion de se réjouir. Il y a bien de petits surgissements de-ci, de là, comme sur « Dead End », par exemple, mais cela ne fait que nous rappeler que l’on a déjà entendu ça bien souvent et sur des albums infiniment plus convaincants (notamment PRIDE OF LIONS, dernièrement).
On a tout de même le sentiment de ne pas être passé très loin d’un excellent album. Il suffit d’aller de refrain en refrain pour se convaincre qu’il y a de la matière. De même, la plupart des solos sont de véritables bijoux. Mais lorsqu’on s’enfile l’album dans son ensemble, on ne peut que sombrer sous la masse de clichés.
Frederikson et Denander connaissent leur métier : l’interprétation est parfaite et la production - également assurée par le duo – est de grande qualité.
A moins d’être en manque et d’avoir absolument besoin de sa dose mensuelle d’AOR, on pourra éviter cet album.
