Il est loin le temps où GRAVEWORM sortait son premier EP Eternal Winds par le biais du label Serenades Records. Le groupe commence à faire parler de lui avec son enregistrement de 1998 Underneath The Crescent Moon où apparait en guest Sarah Jezebel Deva, chanteuse sur des albums de CRADLE OF FILTH ou encore de THERION. Après avoir sorti quelques albums, participé à de nombreuses tournées, le groupe signe un deal avec le géant allemand : Nuclear Blast. GRAVEWORM a maintenant une carrière conséquente derrière lui, et Collateral Defect est déjà son sixième album qui sort lui chez Massacre Records et qui marque la fin de la collaboration avec NB.
Avec cet opus GRAVEWORM s’éloigne une fois de plus de ses débuts Black-mélodieux (souvenez-vous du somptueux : As The Angels Reach The Beauty) et continue sa mutation vers un Death à tendance Néo-Metal, chemin déjà constaté avec le précédent opus : [n]utopia. Les Italiens ont totalement gommé tous les éléments symphoniques et épiques de leur musique.
Après un morceau instrumental qui sert d’introduction et qui laisse entrevoir le pire, « Bloodwork » le premier véritable titre de l’album fait naitre quelques espoirs : morceau entrainant et inspiré avec un chant typiquement Black. Mais l’album s’essouffle très rapidement. On a l’impression que GRAVEWORM cherche encore sa voie, son style. L’alternance de chant Death, Black puis clair comme sur « Fragile Side » sont déroutant. « Suicide Code », « The Day I Die », ou « Touch Of Hate » sont puisé directement dans les entrailles de DARK TRANQUILITY ! En plus quelle idée d’avoir mis sur cet album une reprise de BONNIE TYLER « I Need A Hero », le groupe serait-il en manque d’inspiration ? En tout cas, il est très loin le temps où le groupe excellait dans les passages où les claviers omniprésents étaient mélangés à de longs hurlements plaintifs propre au Black Metal Symphonique... GRAVEWORM proposait alors une musique personnelle à l'ambiance particulière.
Au final l'album est très moyen. Avec Collateral Defect, GRAVEWORM reprends une toute autre direction et cherche à rejoindre les rangs du Death mélodique à la IN FLAMES ou DARK TRANQUILITY, mais il s’y prend de manière maladroite.
