THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA... J'ai tout de suite pensé au film du même nom, ce qui a attiré mon regard dans la liste de nos Cds en quête de chronique qui cherchent une bonne âme. Est-ce une stratégie pour se faire connaître, en happant au hasard quelques personnes en erreur qui cherchaient des informations sur le long métrage? Bref, on tout cas ça marche bien pour ces métalleux de l'Ohio. En vitrine sur MySpace, ils ont rapidement su attirer les foules du portail communautaire, et cette « net-oriété » leur à ouvert quelques portes, notamment chez Rise Records qui édite leur premier opus : Dear Love : A Beautiful Discord.
Introduit par une solennelle statue, angélique et sombre à la fois, voyons ce que ce disque de Metalcore nous offre. Je me défais des mes à-priori sur un style non usé mais abusé en ce moment, cuisiné à toutes les sauces et pas toujours par les meilleurs cuisiniers. Première chose frappante, ça sonne « cheap ». Difficile d'expliquer pourquoi, la production est pourtant très correcte, mais la densité de la musique est relativement faible. Tout cela manque de tripes, c'est un peu lisse, malgré les hurlements des deux chanteurs. La batterie aurait gagné à avoir un peu plus de profondeur en tout cas.
Pour une fois, le terme Metalcore est très réducteur. Loin de tous les canons éculés du genre, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA (enfin TDWP pour les intimes que nous sommes, fort d'une relation débutée il y a une dizaine de lignes) mélange absolument tout. Pêle-mêle on peut citer du Metalcore bien sûr, des voix tantôt sombres tantôt criardes comme dans un groupe de Black Metal. On note aussi des claviers, pêchant dans les ambiances mélodiques ou dans le Prog, et même des touches de THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN sur certains riffs! (sur « Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over » et « And The Sentence Trails Off... »)! Autant vous dire qu'on se perd un peu. Malgré les qualités de cet album et sa personnalité bien définie, on aimerait un peu plus de cohérence à l'intérieur des titres. Je vous mets en tout cas au défi de me fredonner le début de la chanson que vous écoutez depuis deux minutes! Ce disque est vraiment à part et redonne sa part de créativité au Metalcore.
Reste à parler des écueils tout bonnement horripilants. Tel un BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE (Metalcore ricain pur souche!), certains refrains sont chantés d'une voix claire d'adolescent pré-pubère, qui chantonne alors qu'il s'asperge de Biactol. Cette voix est vraiment insupportable, une longue complainte désespérée, lancinante, qui part dans les hurlements criards, des syllabes qui traaaaaaîîîîînent en longueur et qui font dire : « Mais laisse moi t'achever! Tout le plaisir est pour moi! ». A côté de ça, on a les duos de hurlements, technique que j'ai du mal à supporter également, chaque chanteur tirant la couette de son côté du lit.
Hormis le chant qui est... ce qu'il est, l'album vaut le détour, car fait preuve d'une très grande inventivité. Les musiciens s'autorisent même quelques délires Prog sur « Modeify The Pronunciation ». Comme je l'ai dit, les titres manquent de tenue, on sent trop les « bouts » de chanson collés les uns aux autres. En tout cas c'est un groupe à suivre, aux grandes capacités. Gageons qu'ils parviennent à les exploiter au mieux!
