Comme nous l’avions dit il y a peu, HANGMAN’S CHAIR est issu des restes mortels du groupe originaire de la région parisienne ES LA GUERILLA, très bon groupe au demeurant. Comme son nom l’indique (nul besoin de traduction), ce quintet francilien n’est pas là pour faire la chouille. Oubliez-les pour fêter la Saint Patrick à grands coups de godets remplis de cervoise. Par contre, pour la Toussaint, ils feront parfaitement l’affaire. Poursuivant les pas de ES LA GUERILLA, le groupe explore cette fois-ci les sinuosités et les aspérités des travers humains, nos vices faisant ici figure de proue et de fil conducteur pour la thématique de ce premier album de HANGMAN’S CHAIR au titre évocateur de (a lament for…) THE ADDICTS. Du Stoner mélodique et dépressif, les neuf pistes composant l’opus sont empruntes d’une mélancolie douce amère se matchant on ne peut mieux avec les thèmes abordés (drogues, dépressions, etc.).
Le tout est accentué par un emploi récurrent de guitares lourdes et empestées, un chant plaintif et profond sans pour autant sombrer dans le pathos le plus basique et minimaliste. On ressent ainsi cette tiédeur fétide, cette pesanteur que le quintet parisien retranscrit à merveille dans ces neuf compositions. Lent, oblong et généreusement consolidé à la fois, HANGMAN’S CHAIR emmené par son frontman Keo se caractérise par une pêche d’enfer. Les compositions mélodieuses tirées à bout de bras par la voix rompue et asthénique de Keo apporte une atmosphère toute élégiaque à cette première œuvre tout simplement mature. Une sorte de LIFE OF AGONY en plus dépressif et mélancolique, surtout que le chant de Keo ressemble quelque peu à celui de Keith Caputo. Un savant mélange de BLACK SABBATH pour la lourdeur et l’aspect vénéneux dans les riffs et de LYNYRD SKYNYRD pour tout ce qui est de cette atmosphère sudiste grasse, humide et propice à l’émergence d’anophèles en tout genre.
«Neurotic disorder (part I)» est une merveille d’introspection acoustique, en plein rite vaudou dans les tourbières de la Nouvelle Orléans alors que son pendant «Neurotic Disorder (part II)» se compose d’incantations saugrenues sur fond de lignes de basse grasses et gémissantes. Il en sera de même avec «The Snow is Back in Town» à la musicalité et aux chœurs fondants. Un vrai talent de composition, hallucinant et chaotique. HANGMAN’S CHAIR sait aussi hausser le ton lorsque cela est nécessaire avec «I Am Proud to Destroy Myself» qui veut tout dire, sur une rythmique pourtant plus enjouée serait-on tenté de dire, ou bien avec des titres verdâtres et affectés comme «Sad But Drunk» qui lance les ébats sur l’alcoolémie alors que les basses ronflantes et clinquantes de «Dancing Under The Noose» annoncent le déluge d’une déflagration faite de lourdeur et de douleur. On obtient alors un album qui ressemble dans les thétiques abordées, l’ambiance délétère et incommodante à PANTERA et son Great Southern Trendkill. Cependant, les parisiens font preuve de personnalité et d’originalité. Un premier album réussi, plaisant et musical. Avec HANGMAN’S CHAIR, c’est du lourd venu du bayou parisien… On reprendra un bon petit verre de whisky !
