Est-ce que le Doom avec un grand « D » est seulement réservé aux groupes venant de Scandinavie ou d’Angleterre ? Il faut croire que ce genre dépressif connaît un renouveau, il n’y a donc pas que MY DYING BRIDE, CANDELMASS, SHAPE OF DESPAIR ou MY SHAMEFULL, il faut compter avec la jeune garde qui arrive comme ABLASE IN HATRED, FORGOTTEN DAYLIGHT et donc SYRACH.
Parler de « jeune » pour SYRACH n’est pas très approprié car le groupe s’est formé en 1993, mais ce terme concerne sa discographie, car Days Of Wrath est le deuxième opus de ce groupe Norvégien qui vient de … et je vous le donne en mille, de Bergen !
Le Doom de SYRACH se rapproche plus de SHAPE OF DESPAIR que de CANDELMASS, c'est-à-dire qu’il est plus dans le genre Doom/Death que Doom Heavy bien que quelques moments sont assez proche de REVERAND BIZARRE. Il faut dire que la voix sombre, gutturale et caverneuse de Kenneth "Ripper" Olsen y est pour quelque chose. Accompagnée de mélodies lourdes et mélancoliques, le style de SYRACH s’éloigne de temps en temps du genre classique lent et lourd caractérisant le Doom/Death.
Avec des titres comme « Stigma Diabolikum » ou « Come Daemons », le groupe montre que pour pondre de bons morceaux de Doom, il n’est pas nécessaire que les titres durent près d’un quart d’heure. Il suffit d’avoir de bonnes mélodies intenses et entraînantes bien que l’attrait de ce genre de style est caractérisé par des morceaux bien remplis… Le rythme employé, souvent soporifique, finit par ennuyer un peu. La production étrange ne correspond pas au style et est totalement inadaptée et indigne. Heureusement il y a « The Firm Grip Of Death » et ses 14 minutes qui font oublier les approximations de studio. On retrouve aussi sur cette galette quelques invités connus comme Grutle d’ENSLAVED et encore Silje Wergeland d’OCTAVIA APERATI.
Au final, Days Of Wrath est un album inégal. Inégal entre la qualité des morceaux et la production. Inégal entre la cohésion des titres et l’exécution de ceux-ci. A chaque point positif se trouve en opposition un point négatif…
