Mes dernières expériences en groupes italiens n’ont pas été toutes très concluantes (TASTER’S CHOICE, par exemple). Pourtant, je suis d’un naturel entêté et je ne veux pas risquer de passer à côté d’un bon groupe à cause d’un a priori stupide. Aussi, je me suis dit que j’allais me lancer dans l’aventure KEENANTS. Contrairement à ce qui pourrait laisser penser la note de la chronique de prime abord, je n’ai pas trouvé le groupe mauvais. Il a même plein d’atouts. Le moindre n’étant pas la voix de Luca de Stefano. Alors pourquoi ne pas mettre plus ? Tout simplement parce que, malgré les nombreux atouts de ce groupe, il est vrai qu’il fait penser à beaucoup d’autres et qu’il lui manque encore une âme propre, solide et déterminée, qui ferait qu’il pourrait avancer sans tout le temps souffrir la comparaison des références dans le genre. D’un autre côté, se faire comparer à KORN, j’ai déjà vu pire, mais il faut qu’ils arrivent à sortir de cette ombre pour s’affirmer en tant qu’entité.
Sinon, au niveau technique, c’est du tout bon. Le son n’est pas en reste non plus. Et il y a même de très très bonne idée sur ce disque. J’ai personnellement adoré le titre « Earthbound », avec son riff principal qui m’a fait penser à un vieux MILK, pour ceux qui auraient découvert ce groupe durant la phase « tout le monde fait du grunge et est un précurseur de ce genre, ouais, c’est super ! », et un couplet susurré comme une petite voix dans le coin de la tête. On peut aussi saluer le mélange entre puissance brute Neo (« This Song Is Not In A Playlist ») et d’autres influences plus Fusion.
Revenons un instant sur le chant de Luca de Stefano. C’est vraiment le principal atout de KEENANTS. Il semble à l’aise dans beaucoup de registres. Que ce soient les hurlements, les growls, les voix claires, les chuchotements (si, tout le monde ne sait pas les faire pour que cela rende quelque chose de bien sur un morceau)… il se balade d’une manière presque honteuse. Mais, comme pour le reste, il y a certains moments où cela fait trop penser à truc ou à machin, ce qui est dommage, au vu de son talent.
Donc, KEENANTS est un groupe qu’il faut surveiller de très près. Un groupe au fort potentiel avec un chanteur qui peut faire toute la différence. Après ce premier album pour sortir de l’anonymat, il leur faut maintenant s’affirmer dans ce style qu’ils sont capables de ranimer.
