La Finlande est au Metal ce que le FC Nantes est (fut ?) au Football français : un véritable vivier. Comment un pays que l'on dit si isolé peut nous sortir une scène aussi variée et talentueuse : après STRATOVARIUS, AMORPHIS, NIGHTWISH, CHILDREN OF BODOM, SONATA ARCTICA, LORDI, SINAMORE ou encore THUNDERSTONE, voici donc venu TWILIGHT GUARDIANS. On passera sur l'originalité du nom du groupe (à quand IRON PRIEST ou encore GAMMA FEAR ?), ou sur la confusion liée à la pochette (parfaite pour le Death mélodique ... mais pas ici), et jetons nous sur ce nouvel album, Ghost Reborn.
Nouvel album, car mine de rien, TWILIGHT GUARDIANS en est à son quatrième effort. A l'origine, le quintet a fait parler de lui grâce à sa surprenante cover de MADONNA, "La Isla Bonita". Mais c'est plutôt du côté de MASTERPLAN (avec Jorn Lande) et THUNDERSTONE que lorgne ce Ghost Reborn. Ce Power Metal mélodique, sur lequel se pose la voix rauque et presque bluesy de Vesa Virtanen, n'échappe en rien aux clichés du genre : gratteux hypertechnique qui vous en met en la vue (Carl-Johan Gustafson), duels de guitares et claviers à Mach 2 (aux claviers, c'est Jari Pailamo), enchainement de titres rapides ou plus typés FM, etc. D'ailleurs, "Rainbow's Gold" renvoie tout droit au Malmsteen de Fire And Ice, voire d'EUROPE (on croirait entendre le riff de "Cherokee" en accéléré). Et même avec le sympathique "Walk This Line" et ses notes de synthé des années 80, on se retrouve propulsés 20 ans en arrière…
Si au premier abord tout cela sonne un peu daté, TWILIGHT GUARDIANS sauve les meubles avec brio, grâce à un talent indéniable de composition ("The Game"). Et que dire du mid-tempo "Out Of Our Hands" et son final grandiose teinté de choeurs émouvants, à faire pâlir l'ami Tony Kakko (SONATA ARCTICA) ? Tout ça en 35 minutes : pas le temps de s'endormir ni de trouver ça ringard. Il y a des albums comme ça qui n'apportent rien de vraiment neuf mais qui demeurent agréables à découvrir.
