ARTEFACT (FRA) - Ruins (2008)

C’est déjà le troisième album pour les français de ARTEFACT et pourtant c’est avec Ruins que je découvre ces frenchies. Il faut dire que c’est la pochette qui m’a donné envie de jeter une oreille sur cet opus : sombre et ténébreuse, elle n’a rein à voir avec celles des précédentes sorties car elle annonce les prémices d’une œuvre profonde. Existant depuis l’an 2000, ARTEFACT a dû au fils des ans, peaufiner son jeu, et acquérir une expérience nécessaire pour franchir des paliers significatifs.
Dès la fin de l’intro « Their Cave », le Black Metal du groupe apparait immédiatement intense, volontaire et rageur. Attention, il ne s’agit pas d’un BM à tendance old schoold ou Black N’Roll mais plutôt un BM fouillé, complexe dans le genre d’un EMPEROR des grands soirs. Il faut dire que Ruins a les atouts de la brutalité du Black avec une touche d’approche progressive qui le rend aussi subtile. L’influence EMPEROR/DISSECTION est très présente, mais j’ai été surpris lors de l’écoute du titre « Fountain Of The Enchantress », où je croyais tout simplement avoir insérer un disque récent de OPETH dans ma platine.
Tout au long des 10 titres de cette galette, les arrangements sont très riches et prennent une place prépondérante dans la musique du groupe. Riches, variées et inspirées, les compos de Ruins ne manque pas d’arguments pour convaincre, mais les quelques chœurs ou passages au chant clair ne sont pas toujours appropriés. Le groupe excelle lors des passages les plus intenses comme sur le premier véritable morceau de l’album : « Gargoyles Unleashing ». Le gros travail de la section rythmique y est pour beaucoup. Par moment le chant peut paraitre excessif, ou même quelconque et ce ne sont pas les passages clairs ou plus calme qui estompent cette impression.
Jouissant d’une production et d’un son assez brut, Ruins pourra se vanter de garder toute sa dimension en live et ne pas décevoir. Proposant des titres techniques aux structures complexes, j’ai l’impression que le groupe a choisi la carte de la sincérité en ne cachant pas de possibles approximations par un son crade ou une production étouffée.
Avec pratiquement une heure au compteur, Ruins devrait être un album important pour la suite de ARTEFACT, où son seul bémol peut être l’outro qui pour moi n’est pas indispensable.
