Une pochette à la fois candide et qui peut aussi être d’une grande provocation. Une image à la fois lisse et qui suscite de vives réactions. Une présentation soignée. Autant de détails qui donnent envie d’entrer dans l’univers de MACHINA DEUS EX pour savoir de quoi il retourne. Surtout qu’après recherche, le groupe vient du coin où j’habite. Un bon point pour eux puisqu’il n’y a que des gens biens par là-bas, non ?
Bon, je dois bien dire que je n’ai pas été tout de suite séduit par leur musique. « N.W . » me semblait un rien plat comme morceau. Pourtant, les ingrédients qui sont ensuite distillés tout au long de l’album étaient déjà présents, mais cela n’a pas pris tout de suite sur moi. Par contre, dés le début de « Carcinogenic », j’étais dedans. Le mélange des voix qui se fait de manière très harmonieuse, le refrain très prenant, et le mélange de riff dur et d’une rythmique batterie beaucoup plus dansante sonnait vraiment bien.
Et puis, le reste de l’album repose sur le même modèle : une alternance entre des morceaux devant lesquels personne ne peut rester indifférent, et d’autres qui sont un poil en dessous, du moins à la première écoute. Parce qu’ensuite, on se rend compte qu’ils sont très bons aussi, mais ne possèdent pas forcément cette force intrinsèque de la mélodie imparable. Parmi les titres incontournables, il y a « My Heroine » et son introduction-reflet « Enioreh Ym », une instrumentale électronique vraiment très bonne. D’ailleurs, c’est une des forces de MACHINA DEUS EX, savoir utiliser de manière intelligente les machines, qui apportent énormément aux morceaux, sans écraser les autres instruments. Mais, sans ces machines, la musique de MDE ne serait bien évidemment pas la même. On peut aussi citer « Favorite Slave » dans les titres qu’on ne peut louper. Les chœurs monotones de « Misfired Treaty » donnent une dimension nouvelle au morceau et soulignent parfaitement le chant.
Le chant… c’est une autre force de MACHINA DEUS EX. Sandrine et Gregory se complètent parfaitement, sans jamais se marcher sur les pieds. Que ce soit dans des parties intimistes (« On The Verge ») ou bien dans des parties un peu plus énervées, les deux savent jouer de leur organe pour apporter ce qu’il faut au morceau. Par contre, il est vrai que des passages un peu plus énervés avec seulement Sandrine manquent de quelque chose. Elle a une voix très belle et maîtrisée, mais manque parfois d’un rien de patate pour soutenir des parties un rien plus violentes. Grégory, lorsqu’il s’éraille plus la voix, possède un timbre assez nasillard qui n’est pas sans me faire penser à Dave Mustaine. Pas désagréable du tout. Et puis, il sait aussi varier ses effets pour ne pas paraître lassant.
C’est donc une réelle bonne surprise pour moi que d’avoir découvert MACHINA DEUS EX.
