"Culte de la Mort", "L'Heure de l'Exorciste", "Serpent des Profondeurs", "Dans la Crypte de la Vengeance" ... ça vous suffit ou il vous en faut plus pour comprendre que DEATCHAIN (rien que le nom ...) ne fait pas dans la dentelle ? Ce combo finlandais (oooh !!!! Miracle ! Encore un ..............) sort là son troisième album, sur lequel il a gravé 8 titres bien burnés de Death Metal, ou plutôt de Deathrash Metal comme l'indique si bien le titre de leur galette précédente Deathrash Assault (2005). Eh oui, car il est très aisé, à l'écoute de ce Cult Of Death, de distinguer les influences de DEATHCHAIN : du Thrash (SLAYER, TESTAMENT, DESTRUCTION) au Black Metal (SATYRICON, MAYHEM), en passant par le Death (MORBID ANGEL, DISSECTION) et le Heavy (KING DIAMOND). Quant au chanteur, KJ Khaos, il ne cache pas son admiration pour CROWBAR, DOWN et donc Phil Anselmo.
Ce cocktail (sans Tom Cruise...) réussi se veut très agressif et bien graisseux, non sans éviter quelques clichés un peu faciles mais finalement jouissifs pour tous les nostalgiques du Thrash des eighties : comment ne pas se remémorer le coup de tonnerre de "Ride The Lightning" quand frappe la foudre sur "Witchstorm" ? Comment ne pas être admiratif devant cette section rythmique diablement précise et infernale ? Le batteur Kassara ne me fera pas mentir si je vous dis que le Metal brutal révèle chaque année de prodigieux musiciens : sa performance permet de faire le lien entre les nombreux changements de tempos et de styles de DEATCHAIN, menés par les parties tantôt incisives, tantôt grasses des guitaristes Corpse et Cult.
DEATHCHAIN, dont les 3/5èmes forment d'ailleurs le plus obscur FORGOTTEN HORROR, semble ainsi avoir digéré toutes ses sources d'inspiration et nous régurgite son Death/Black/Thrash en pleine gueule. La production est à la hauteur, grâce à Jari Tuomainen (pour l'enregistrement) et Sami Jamsen (mixage) qui donnent à Cult Of Death un son "live" et très "root". Si il y a un défaut à ressortir de cet album, c'est peut-être de manquer de titres un peu plus marquants, bien que chaque morceau soit le reflet parfait de l'identité du combo finnois. Mais pour sortir de la masse, il va falloir passer la vitesse supérieure, et nous préparer un album culte ... Of Death ?
