La première impression quand on a un nouveau CD dans les mains passe souvent par le packaging et le visuel qui s’y trouve. Avec un beau digipack et un graphisme très apaisant, ce qui est extrêmement rare dans le monde du Metal, j’étais intrigué. Et puis, je me posais des questions en voyant les titres des morceaux, qui me semblaient pour le moins étrange et tout autant incompréhensibles. Ce qui est un peu normal quand on sait que le groupe chante dans une langue qui lui est propre, comme le faisait le groupe historique MAGMA. Bon, on repassera alors pour que je parle du message qui est véhiculé.
Le choix d’une langue « incompréhensible » n’est pas anodin pour KHEMEÏA. En effet, le groupe veut utiliser la voix comme un véritable instrument et pas seulement en véhicule de paroles. Cette voix est vraiment étrange. Elle oscille entre de bons gros grognements tels qu’on les connaît et quelque chose de singulier. Ce quelque chose est un mélange entre des sonorités orientales (indiennes, entre autre) et une technique vocale utilisée en Mongolie : le chant diphonique. Je ne pourrai vous parler en détail de cette technique (« tu n’es pas encore assez rapide, petit scarabée »), mais son rendu amène un côté peu commun dans les morceaux, même les plus brutaux. A la première écoute, on a l’impression que Jérémie Nechtschein est toujours un peu faux. Puis, en écoutant mieux et en ouvrant un peu son esprit, on se rend compte que les effets sont subtils et voulus et sont loin de la dissonance que l’on trouvait au début.
Côté musical, on oscille entre des morceaux brutaux et complexes (« Aumendei »), des morceaux plus convenus quoi que rentre dedans (« Donsht »), ou des ovnis qui sont tout en douceur (« Sruti »). Ce dernier est surtout un morceau fait en percussions et en chant, avec quelques effets mélodiques en fond, mais qui ne sont pas la trame du morceau. Le mélange des genres et des cultures tel que pratiqué par KHEMEÏA m’a fait penser à la démarche artistique de MADJIK, même si leur Metal est beaucoup plus puissant et brutal. On soulignera aussi les gros efforts sur la rythmique. Les changements incessants sont maîtrisés à la perfection et les rythmes sont loin d’être binaires. Le point culminant, metalistiquement parlant, est pour moi « Ü », qui possède un rythme de batterie beaucoup plus dance floor (au sens MASS HYSTERIA du terme) qui n’est pas sans rappeler ce que savais faire SPICY BOX il y a longtemps, ou ce que produisent les SIDILARSEN aujourd’hui. Le tout sans machines.
Même si on aurait aimé voyager encore un peu dans l’univers du groupe, on a ici le parfait exemple de ce que l’autoproduction peut engendrer : un disque de grande qualité, loin des sentiers battus, avec une production irréprochable, une artwork soigné et un groupe qui est loin d’avoir fini ses recherches et ses expérimentations.
