Une chose est certaine : il est loin le temps des autoproductions pourries qui ne valaient pas tripette. Aujourd’hui, les groupes se donnent les moyens pour sortir des produits finis de bonne qualité, parfois aussi bons que s’ils avaient été produits par une maison de disque. TOXXIC TOYZ n’échappe pas à cette règle et sort, avec F.E.A.R., un disque de qualité dont l’écoute peut se faire sans craindre des parasites douteux qui masqueraient la qualité de la musique. On n’est pas au niveau des grosses sorties surproduites actuelles, mais je ne pense pas que c’est ce que recherchait le groupe. Quand on écoute leur musique, on sent une volonté de revenir à quelque chose de plus dépouillé, malgré une virtuosité indéniable, comme ce qu’il se faisait à la grande époque de la musique qu’ils jouent : Heavy Metal et Hard Rock.
Ça y est, les morts sont lâchés. TOXXIC TOYZ revient aux sources, sans pour autant tomber dans le ridicule. Ils offrent un mélange de bon gros Heavy, teinté parfois de touches maidienne (« Mystify »), saupoudré d’une pellicule de Progressif. Pourtant, ils savent ne pas se perdre dans de longues plages démonstratives pour se concentrer sur l’essentiel et faire en sorte que leurs morceaux soient percutants. Puis, on vogue vers d’anciennes sonorités, qui pourraient faire penser à quelque chose de plus Hard FM, ou avec des accents empruntés à KISS (« Pretty baby »). Malgré tout, le tout possède suffisamment de modernisme pour ne pas sombrer dans la nostalgie. C’est direct et ça touche au but. « Evil’s Face » rameutera les plus speed des auditeurs avec sa touche un peu plus Thrash.
TOXXIC TOYZ c’est un peu la manière de revenir à quelque chose d’essentiel, sans pour autant essayé de reproduire absolument ce qui a été fait en se disant « c’était mieux avant ». Pas vraiment un hommage, mais en tous cas un véritable second souffle pour une musique que l’on croyait presque morte. Et puis voilà un groupe qui use de la double grosse caisse avec intelligence. Elle est là, mais juste pour servir la musique et pas pour l’écraser. Sans être une révélation, TOXXIC TOYZ a le mérite de ne pas tourner le dos à la musique qu’ils apprécient et de la remettre un peu au goût du jour.
