Somewhere In Time avait amorcé un virage dans l’univers et la musique d’IRON MAIDEN. Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, l’album qui lui succède, confirme complètement cette nouvelle orientation plus progressive et certainement un peu moins agressive. Les claviers sont toujours bien présents, certainement même un peu plus que sur l’album précédent. Il suffit d’écouter l’introduction de « Moonchild » pour s’en rendre compte. Est-ce que cela enlève par contre de l’intérêt à la musique d’IRON MAIDEN ? Non, bien au contraire, c’en est même la continuité logique. Et même, les compositions se trouvent enrichies par de nouvelles possibilités.
Le changement musical se retrouve particulièrement sur un titre comme « Infinite Dreams », qui commence de manière assez calme et lente. Pas vraiment une ballade, mais pas non plus très Heavy. Puis, le morceau s’énerve un peu, change de rythme et on entre dans une dimension jouissive. C’est beau, c’est bon, et on espère que le reste sera du même acabit. Malheureusement, la chanson suivante est « Can I Play With Madness ». Certainement taillé pour être un single, c’est une chanson qui fait un peu tâche sur le reste de l’album. Le refrain est assez gnangnan. Heureusement, le tout ne tombe pas dans les abîmes grâce à un break un peu plus sympa. Heureusement, tous les morceaux qui suivent sont dans la même veine que « Moonchild » et « Infinite Dreams » : bons et sans fautes.
Mais la pièce incontournable de cet album est le titre éponyme. Pour une fois, le morceau le plus long et le plus ambitieux ne se trouve pas en fin d’album. Sur vinyle, il débutait la seconde face et ce d’une manière phénoménale. On plonge dans presque dix minutes de bonheur. Certain pourront trouver la guitare du couplet beaucoup trop austère, mais cette austérité est aussi là pour souligner toute la beauté du reste. Le break du milieu, avec la voix de Bruce, la basse de Steve et la batterie de Nicko, principalement, fait penser au même genre de break de « Rime Of The Ancient Mariner », mais ne casse pas le morceau. Il le sublime. Et l’explosion de riffs déments qui s’en suit me plonge toujours autant dans une admiration peut-être un peu excessive.
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son marque le point culminant d’une partie de la carrière du groupe. Même Eddie se retrouve disloqué dans un paysage glacial. S’il n’y avait pas eu cette faute de goût qu’est « Can I Play With Madness », cet album aurait frôlé la perfection.
