MAR DE GRISES. Avec un nom comme ça, j’ai cru au départ que le groupe était originaire du Japon, qu’on ne savait pas dire si les musiciens étaient des hommes, des femmes ou des aliens et qu’ils avaient volé le gel de San Goku pour se coiffer. Au final, je me suis retrouvé un peu con avec un truc débarquant du Chili, les haricots rouges en moins. Avec une accroche telle que « Melodic Avant-Doom Death », j’avais pris un sac rempli de bonne humeur et de sentiments joyeux pour ne pas me retrouver complètement déprimé après l’écoute de cet album. Et pourtant, même si une profonde mélancolie et un sentiment général de désolation étaient présents pendant toute l’écoute, je ne me suis pas retrouvé confronté à autant de désespoir que j’aurai pu l’imaginer. C’est aussi sans doute grâce à la puissante orchestration dont bénéficient les titres de MAR DE GRISES. Loin de proposer un Doom glacial dû aux seules guitares lancinantes, les cinq musiciens usent d’un clavier hypnotique qui propulse l’auditeur dans ses infimes retranchements.
Draining The Waterheart est un album qu’il faut écouter à maintes reprises pour en extraire et en comprendre toutes les facettes. Et si on veut pouvoir apprécier les morceaux qui pourraient sinon faire penser à une lente variation autour du même thème. Mais, s’il est bien une chose que MAR DE GRISES n’aime pas faire, c’est se copier mutuellement. J’avoue que j’ai été surtout attiré par « One Possessed », titre assez classique, mais qui est une plage de relatif calme dans ce marasme musical. Mais le summum de l’extase a été atteint avec « Liturgia; Convite y Prefiguración/Purgatorio/Diálogo Infierno ». Ce morceau est un pur bijou et le riff final est tout bonnement somptueux. Il est à la fois entrainant et mielleux, puissant et bourré d’émotions, presque à en faire pleurer. C’est du concentré d’émotions à l’état brut. Et la voix de Juan Escobar sait se faire à la fois susurrante et destructrice, quand il passe d’un chant clair à la limite du murmure vers une voix beaucoup plus Death, mais toujours en toile de fond, comme des propos insidieux dans notre crâne.
Au final, MAR DE GRISES saura attirer les adeptes de musique expérimentale à tendance dépressive mais pourra aussi plaire à quelqu’un qui recherche de l’émotion dans les morceaux et qui a l’esprit assez ouvert pour se lancer à corps perdu dans leur univers singulier.
