ULVHEDIN est un groupe norvégien formé en 1994 à Haugesund et après une démo, il a fallut attendre 10 ans pour entendre son premier album Pagan Manifest (octobre 2004). Mais malheureusement le Drakkar ULVHEDIN est resté bloqué sur un isthme… pas de nouvelle de ce groupe depuis ce premier et unique album… existe-t-il encore ???
Pourtant les choses sont claires : les norvégiens jouent un Viking Metal avec quelques tendances Heavy. Se rapprochant musicalement de groupe comme BORKNAGAR, ENSLAVED, EINHERJER ou WINDIR, les compositions de cet album reposent sur d’excellents riffs et de nombreuses parties mélodiques. Bien que les influences de ses compatriotes norvégiens est indéniable, la musique de ULVHEDIN n’est pas comme pour la grande majorité, un Viking Metal progressif et majestueux, mais plus à tendance Heavy dont les riffs de guitares sont essentiels dans l’importance des morceaux. En tout cas, Pagan Manifest porte bien sont nom : il relate la culture et la mythologie nordique et viking.
Le Viking/Pagan Black Metal de ULVHEDIN est totalement convaincant, où les tempos globalement lents et médiums et les parties de claviers appuient parfaitement les ambiances épiques et par moments folkloriques. La présence d’une voix claire alternée ou couplée avec une autre plus extrême, remplie parfaitement les conditions qui font le succès du genre aujourd’hui comme sur le titre « The One Eyed God ».
Pagan Manifest est d’un accès immédiat, ce qui peut écourter sa longévité, mais il est impossible de contredire la qualité d’écriture des morceaux. L'album est très homogène et les chansons sont parfois très mélodiques (« Echo Of The Goddesses Voices ») et aussi par moments un peu plus agressives (« Where The Spirits Gather »). Cet opus possède beaucoup de qualité qu’on a du mal à croire qu’il s’agisse là de la première galette du groupe. Evidement, il faut aimer ce style un peu particulier et ce coté « à part ». A n’en pas douter, cet album peut concurrencer sans aucun problème n’importe quel disque d’ENSLAVED. En plus, bien que l’album soit dans une tonalité mid-tempo, quelques blast beats viennent rappeler ici-et-là que ce genre fait partie avant tout de la catégorie extrême du Metal, et cela fait bien plaisir !!!
Avec ce Pagan Manifest, on arrive tout de suite à sentir que le groupe possède beaucoup d’idées et a une force d’inspiration incontestable. Nous sommes en 2008 et il serait temps que le groupe donne de ses nouvelles et pourquoi pas par un second opus…
