NEURASTHENIA est un quartet italien qui, en 2004, à décidé de rebâtir son royaume sur les cendres encore incandescentes d’ANIMALATOR, fondé en 1996. Après une démo autoproduite, c’est le label Uk-Division Records qui prend sous son aile ce jeune étalon. Ils produisent ensemble une nouvelle démo avant d’enregistrer et de sortir ce premier essai qu’est Possessed.
Revendiquant clairement leurs influences Thrash, les mecs de NEURASTHENIA ont bien l’intention de ne pas se laisser marcher sur les pieds par leurs compatriotes. Le bootleg et l’artwork jouent dans des couleurs très stendhaliennes (du rouge, du noir) avec des photos illustratives promotionnelles inspirées de la « trve rebel attitvde ». Si l’on ajoute à cela l’illustration de la cover d’une sobriété désolante, on peut légitimement s’attendre à avoir affaire à un énième groupe de « blackened » Death Metal en mal d’inspiration. Mais il est désormais dans l’ère du temps de concevoir que l’habit ne fait plus le moine. C’est pourquoi NEURASTHENIA annonce brutalement son concept musical dès les premières notes. L’introduction m’ayant évoqué Elm Street pour son esprit « gare à tes fesses petite, le croquemitaine t’observe » ouvre sans grande originalité l’opus. Ce n’est qu’une ouverture. La continuité est un condensé de Thrash Metal sans concessions. On y retrouve des sonorités des pionniers teutons comme SODOM, KREATOR ou DESTRUCTOR mais aussi, et c’est plus étonnant, des solos et autres variantes Speed et Power. NEURASTHENIA aurait-il pour intention de ressusciter ce style agonisant depuis la fin des années 80 ? Si ce n’est pas une résurrection, c’est au moins un poignant hommage. Et le mieux, c’est que les transalpins parviennent à varier considérablement les atmosphères, créant ainsi des pistes ambiantes (« Feel Possessed »), Power (« In Loving Of »), techniques (« The Last Order Of God ») et Heavy (« Assassination »). La mayonnaise prendrait même sans œufs tellement ce mélange est abouti et hétérogène. Seul bémol, le chant clair et criard de Neil. Il freine considérablement la progression musicale en donnant l’impression d’être forcé et faux (un comble dans ce style !). Si j’ai apprécié les envolées lyriques que certains glam-rockeurs ne renieraient pas, j’ai moins aimé le côté théâtral à la Garm (vocaliste d’ULVER) période ARCTURUS. Peut-être que doublée de growls ou tout simplement growlée, elle aurait donné un côté plus profond à l’ensemble néanmoins très bon pour une première.
En tout cas, ce n’est pas une dame du monde, cachée derrière une voilette, des manteaux de fourrure et gantée de soie qui aura l’audace d’acheter ce disque, qui, vous l’aurez compris, conviendra mieux aux amateurs de « Thrash Revival » de bonne facture.
