Aaaah, le Japon ! Loin d’être une terre promise en matière de musique bestiale, primitive et conventionnelle, il fascine toujours pour son aura économique exceptionnelle et son autodidaxie qui en à fait un moteur mondial avec l’Europe et les Etats-Unis. La fameuse « Triade ». Vous avez révisé votre cours de géographie économique ? Ca tombe bien, moi aussi. J’en ai profité pour constater que l’explosion exponentielle des groupes de Metal au Japon concorde à cette logique de « Triade », jusque dans le domaine de l’art musical. Si le pays du soleil levant nous avait habitués pendant deux bonnes décennies avec le Visual Kei à ses spécimens les plus exubérants (de X-JAPAN à MOI DIX MOIS en passant par VERSAILLES, RENTRER EN SOI, KAGEROU et j’en passe…), il semble résolument décidé à regarder vers l’avant.
Alors après les arrivées en fanfares de BLOOD STAIN CHILD, RITUAL CARNAGE et VORTEX, voici LOST EDEN qui déboule de nulle part, auréolé d’un contrat avec Candlelight Records, avec son premier brûlot, Cycle Repeats. Un avant-propos futuriste et nous voilà plongés dans le grand bain. A base d’un Death Metal caustique et moderne, LOST EDEN se positionne en hybride d’un IN FLAMES à la sauce nuoc-mâm. En incluant dans chaque complainte une dose supplémentaire de samples électronique, il corrobore complètement le propos à l’arrière de la pochette du CD promo, « For fans of IN FLAMES, SOILWORK and TRIVIUM ». Tellement banal. On pourrait alors légitimement avoir peur d’une inspiration tirant sur le plagiat. Heureusement, les japonais proposent ici un disque somme toute assez homogène pour ne pas être un vulgaire calque impénétrable. Composée de titres bien structurés avec une classique tendance à alterner couplets ravageurs et refrains édulcorés, la rondelle passerait presque pour un des albums du moment pour peu que la scène suédoise ne nous soit qu’un vaste charabia. Doté également d’une excellente production plus carrée qu’une coupe façon « service militaire », Cycle Repeats aurait pu se démarquer, lui et ses méandres futuristes, moyennant une certaine fantaisie et recherche de personnalité dans des pistes trop souvent acquises à la « Swedish dépendance ».
Hélas, les plus connaisseurs ne se laisseront pas duper par ce manque d’originalité flagrant dissimulé derrière une durée toute juste supérieure à une demi-heure. Sur ce coup, les membres de LOST EDEN semblent avoir joué leur chance au culot. Et s’ils ne se dépatouillent pas trop mal pour ce premier jet, il faudra veiller à vite changer de muse pour la suite ou ce sera dans le Ginnungagap que leur prochain full-lenght sera jeté.
