Connaissez-vous le « Evil Elvis » ? Ce petit homme trapu au regard noir, nommé Glenn Danzig ? Non ? Connaissez-vous les MISFITS ? Ou encore SAMHAIN ? Mais si, cette voix ténébreuse à mi-chemin entre celle du King Elvis et de Jim Morrisson ? Voilà, vous y êtes.
Alors maintenant, imaginez cette voix atypique, genre crooner énervé, chantant sur un Heavy Metal teinté de blues, le tout étant fortement influencé par le Punk Horror dont Glenn Danzig fut le géniteur. Et là vous tenez la formule magique qui a fait de DANZIG, le groupe, l’un des phénomènes du début des années 90.
Après un premier album éponyme relativement passé inaperçu, malgré un prometteur single, « Mother », qui n’explosera que quelques années plus tard, le quatuor mené par son sombre leader charismatique remet le couvert avec II : Lucifuge.
D’entrée la barre est placée très haute, avec le ravageur « Long Way Back From Hell », annoncé par les puissants accords de John Christ. Ne cherchez pas de défaut à ce morceau, un peu comme le reste de l’album soit dit en passant, il n’y en a pas. En 4 minutes, DANZIG impose son style et force le respect. Ce son de guitare vintage, ce tempo absolument parfait, la voix de Glenn, ce feeling omniprésent, le jeu de gratte si racé de Christ. Et quand Christ part en solo, c’est la section rythmique, composée du bassiste Eerie Von (ex-SAMHAIN) et du batteur Chuck Biscuits (ex-BLACK FLAG), qui prend le relais et remplit l’espace comme seuls les combos des seventies savaient le faire. La grande classe !
Evidemment, fort de son passé Punk, Danzig ne peut renier ses racines : sur le refrain de « Snakes Of Christ » emmené par le riff ensorceleur de Christ, ou sur les chœurs du mid-tempo et bluesy « Tired Or Being Alive ». Incroyable d’ailleurs, sur la fin de ce titre, comme le tempo accélère … Jouissif.
Je pense aussi à « Her Black Wings » et ses superpositions de voix, le tout soutenu par un riff étouffé et menaçant. Et je ne vous parle pas du très AC/Dcien « Devil’s Plaything » (qui n’a jamais rêvé d’enflammer les foules avec trois accords aussi simples et aussi efficaces ?!!) … C’est là tout le génie de Danzig, il n’y a rien à dire de plus.
Et puis le Glenn est taquin. Provocateur, il aime oser et tente une escapade dans le Blues acoustique (« I’m The One »), quand il ne nous gratifie pas d’une ambiance biker très « Une Nuit En Enfer », que vous retrouverez très bien avec « Killer Wolf ». Sur un album de Metal, il faut avoir des couilles, tout simplement. Sans compter que le bonhomme sait être sensible, comme en atteste « Blood And Tears ». Ne manquerait plus que l’orgue Hammond, et on se croirait sorti de Woodstock …
Il faut souligner que cet album est produit par le grand Rick Rubin (sorcier attitré de SLAYER), qu’on imaginait pas tant dévoué au Metal unique de DANZIG. Et il peut être fier d’avoir travaillé sur un disque intemporel, que je considère personnellement comme l’étendard de DANZIG. La suite de la carrière de DANZIG, en dépit du très bon III : How The Gods Kill et du single « Dirty Black Summer », sera bien plus contestable …
