Mise à part l'apparition de ce nom sur quelques listes de distro, je dois avouer que je n'avais jamais entendu parler de ce groupe ni même écouter la moindre note de musique de ces albums. Pourtant, SVARTAHRID n'est pas un nouveau venue sur la scène du Metal extrême. Formé par deux anciens de la formation MACTATUS (Istar -chant et guitare- Forn -batterie-), SVARTAHRID compte également dans ses rangs NidGrim (Basse) qui est venu se greffer au combo en 2004 pour compléter le line-up.
Existant depuis 1994, le trio norvégien a déjà 3 albums à son actif : Forthcoming Storm (1999) et As The Sunrise Flickers (2000) pour le label Napalm Records, puis suite à d’obscures raisons que je ne connais pas, le troisième opus Sadness And Wrath enregistré en 2002/2003 ne verra le jour qu'en 2007 via le nouveau label du groupe : Soulseller Records.
Les problèmes contractuels réglés, SVARTAHRID s'est donc attaché à (re)lancer une carrière qui a du mal à décoller. Malicious Pride vient donc montrer que le groupe veut rattraper le temps perdu et prendre sa part du gâteux au sein d'une scène Black-Viking en pleine essor.
Enregistré au fameux Akkerhaugen Lydstudio, ce nouvel album des norvégiens peut se vanter d'avoir un son et une production irréprochable. Selon l'étiquette qui leur est attribuée, SVARTAHRID évoluant dans un style Black Epique aux fort accents Viking, comme a pu le faire ENSLAVED ou KAMPFAR, mais contrairement à ces deux compères norvégiens, le trio qui nous intéresse ici est plus brut, plus violent, plus intense. Les éléments qui caractérisent le genre sont évidement présent : chant rageur et démoniaque, les tempos guerriers, son des guitares lourd... La petite touche personnel du groupe vient du fait qu'il ne s'aventure pas dans de long passage atmosphérique, n'utilise peu ou pas d'instruments dit "folkloriques", et que le synthé n'apparaît que très succinctement et reste en arrière plan.
La musique proposée est toujours jouée à un rythme soutenue, sans pour autant être noyé dans des blasts. L'album débute très fort avec "Sons Of Mine" remarquable, mais c'est ensuite que les petits soucis arrivent : l'album semble uniforme, de la même trempe du début jusqu'aux derniers instants ! Pourtant les riffs sont inspirés, accrocheurs, efficaces, mais il manque un je-ne-sais-quoi. Tout ceci fait que ce Malicious Pride est un hommage aux traditions qui ne renouvelle rien… mais qui est agréable à écouter !
